Linux Flavors for
Hacking and Pen-
testing
What is Linux?
Linux® is an open source operating system (OS). An operating
system is the software that directly manages a system’s hardware
and resources, like CPU, memory, and storage. The OS sits between
applications and hardware and makes the connections between all of
your software and the physical resources that do the work.
Linux was designed to be similar to UNIX, but has evolved to run on
a wide variety of hardware from phones to supercomputers. Every
Linux-based OS involves the Linux kernel—which manages
hardware resources—and a set of software packages that make up
the rest of the operating system.

Kali Linux
Kali Linux is the most
widely known Linux
distro for ethical
hacking and penetration
testing. Kali Linux is
developed by Offensive
Security and previously
by BackTrack.
Kali Linux (formerly known as BackTrack Linux) is an open-
source, Debian-based Linux distribution aimed at advanced
Penetration Testing and Security Auditing. Kali Linux contains
several hundred tools targeted towards various information
security tasks, such as Penetration Testing, Security Research,
Computer Forensics and Reverse Engineering. Kali Linux is a
multi platform solution, accessible and freely available to
information security professionals and hobbyists.
Kali Linux was released on the 13th March 2013 as a complete,
top-to-bottom rebuild of BackTrack Linux, adhering completely to
Debian development standards.

Editor's Notes

  • #5 Kali Linux is based on Debian. It comes with a large amount of penetration testing tools from various fields of security and forensics. And now it follows the rolling release model, meaning every tool in your collection will always be up to date. It’s the most advanced penetration testing platform out there, supporting a wide range of devices and hardware platforms. Moreover, Kali Linux provides decent documentation and has a large and active community
