Country of origin labelling (COOL) aims to provide transparency around where foods originate from but its implementation is complex. COOL regulations differ between countries and can be challenging for food businesses to comply with due to globalized supply chains. While COOL does not directly relate to food safety, adhering to its rules helps ensure strong traceability systems. There is ongoing debate around the costs and benefits of COOL for both consumers and businesses.
This document provides tips to help organizations improve their performance on food safety audits by addressing common non-conformances. It identifies the top five non-conformances found in audits as building fabric, housekeeping/hygiene, contamination, HACCP systems, and maintenance/pest control. It then provides specific recommendations in each of these areas to help organizations identify and address potential issues before an audit. The tips include conducting regular inspections of facilities focusing on building integrity, reviewing cleaning procedures and pest control plans, and ensuring HACCP plans and related documentation are up to date. The goal is for organizations to proactively identify and resolve issues in order to minimize non-conformances during audits.
Undeclared allergens continue to be a major challenge in the global food industry due to complex supply chains and changing consumer habits. Allergens can contaminate foods at many stages of production from farms to packaging. Strict management practices are needed to control for allergens, including accurate labeling and segregating allergenic and non-allergenic production areas, but contamination risks remain. Emerging issues like new "free from" product demands and packaging that is not easily distinguishable further complicate allergen management. Vigilant monitoring of all supply chain participants is key to reducing the risk of unexpected allergens in foods.
The document discusses the importance of developing a strong food safety and quality culture within food businesses. It states that a good culture can improve productivity, quality, reduce costs and provide competitive advantages. It identifies several key requirements for establishing a strong culture, including senior management commitment, clear strategies and policies, defined roles, integrated teams, training, measurements, and adapting to changes. The document emphasizes that culture requires constant attention and commitment to develop and maintain.
This document discusses food fraud, which is the intentional adulteration, dilution, substitution, mislabeling, theft or counterfeiting of food for financial gain. It can harm consumers and damage brands. Assessing threats and vulnerabilities is challenging due to a lack of industry knowledge and standardized methodologies. Controls must be implemented to minimize risks, but prioritizing threats can be difficult and detection is not always possible. Ongoing resources are needed to continually monitor for new risks in a complex global supply chain.
How Companies Can Engage Customers by Using Social Plastic in Product Packagi...marcus evans Network
David Katz, founder and CEO of Plastic Bank, believes that companies can engage customers and gain a competitive advantage by using recycled plastic called Social Plastic in product packaging. Plastic Bank creates a global recycling network that empowers communities to exchange plastic waste for goods and services, thereby lifting people out of poverty. Katz states that companies must play a role in environmental cleanup or they will lose business due to shifting consumer demands. Using Social Plastic allows companies to authentically participate in the circular economy and engage stakeholders through transparency into the social impact of the recycled material.
Sustainable Product Packaging in Europe Today - Simo Heljanko & Mårten Karlss...marcus evans Network
The summary discusses sustainable product packaging in Europe. It says that Europe needs to improve its recycling system since China has stopped accepting plastic waste. By 2030 all packaging must contain recycled materials. New recycled plastic and bio-based materials from sugar cane can be used but are currently more expensive. However, their prices should drop with increased competition and consumer demand for sustainable options. Companies may also redesign packages to use less materials to cut costs and plastic usage.
How Kiwi.com Has Transformed the Travel Booking Industry - Oliver Dlouhy News...marcus evans Network
Kiwi.com's proprietary algorithm allows users to combine flights from nearly 700 airlines into single itineraries, resulting in significant savings for customers. The CEO states that the travel industry is shifting from individual airline and hotel sites to meta-search companies like Kiwi.com that offer interlining capabilities. A key to Kiwi.com's success is their "virtual interlining" process that combines flights from various airlines, including budget carriers that normally do not collaborate. Kiwi.com handles over 50 million daily searches and offers frequent price updates and alerts to help customers find the best deals.

Interview with: Dr. Tim J. Nohara, President & Chief Executive Officer, Accipiter Radar
1. Interview with: Dr. Tim J. Nohara,
President & Chief Executive Officer,
Accipiter Radar
There is a need to detect and analyze
security threats in a much wider area
than ever before, according to Dr. Tim
J. Nohara, President & Chief Executive
Officer, Accipiter Radar. As the threat
on the homeland front requires
surveillance that has no time or space
boundaries, sensors must be abstracted
and their information integrated
together so that various agencies can
respond in a coordinated fashion, he
adds.
Accipiter Radar will be present at the
marcus evans Aerospace & Defense
Manufacturing Summit 2013, in Las
Vegas, Nevada, October 20-21, as a
solution provider.
Ho w h a s t h e su r ve i ll a n c e
environment changed in recent
years?
In the 20th century, radar technology
was the gold standard surveillance tool,
as it could detect uncooperative targets
of interest. In the military context, you
could move your assets and people
overseas to a military operation and
survey a specific geography, where
targets were either friend or foe.
Today, in the homeland environment,
the area of interest is the entire
homeland. The threats on safety and
security can occur anywhere, anytime,
and must be distinguished from the
much more numerous innocent civilian
traffic.
Multiple agencies have responsibility.
Users are not sensor experts so threat
awareness must be user-centric and
easy to understand. These are new
requirements in the defense and
security sector.
What surveillance solutions could
address this issue?
The solution sets of the 21st century will
involve a large number of surveillance
sensors that are inexpensive, spatially
distributed, located across the areas of
interest, but abstracted and integrated
together to provide real-time target
information and historical behavior
patterns in support of intelligence-led
operations.
Sensors need to be deployed on a much
wider scale for threat mitigation today,
and they need to plug and play into a
target information system that allows
any number of users and agencies to
interact with the data in the way each
user’s mission requires.
Why should different departments
share surveillance information?
How would it address the cost
element?
Technologies that act like “force
multipliers” are similar to adding more
security personnel. Governments today
typically have a number of different
agencies and departments surveying
movement of people and goods across
borders or within the country, but at
present, they do not readily share
information primarily to protect the
privacy of their citizens.
The defense sector needs to be much
smarter. We need to distinguish
between personal information and non-
sensitive target information. The
information to detect and avert a threat
is often available, but we lack
connectivity between the dots.
If we shared non-sensitive target
information across departments, we
would get a much higher yield on our
security budgets.
Countries could even share target
information or sensor resources with
friendly neighbors, such as the US and
Canada, without impinging on the
privacy of citizens.
Most movement that is observed is
friendly and good, but it is critical to
deter the small percentage that are not.
By sampling target patterns, agencies
could focus their resources on
suspicious activities. This would be
much more cost effective in this
environment of austerity.
Any final thoughts?
This is a new way of thinking about
homeland security. We are in the
information age today, and radar
information networks will leave behind
the old ways of protecting citizens.
The threats
on safety
and security
in the
homeland
can occur
anywhere,
anytime
