nonprofit and leader in reducing preventable illness and early
death caused by tobacco use, poor nutrition and physical

Hepatitis B Foundation Summer Internship

Interns work with professional scientists from the Hepatitis
B Foundation and its research affiliate, the Institute for
Hepatitis and Virus Research, and the Drexel Institute of
Drexel University College of Medicine. Valuable mentoring
and supervision of individual projects is provided for each
student. At the conclusion of the summer, interns present
their projects to the entire faculty in a special seminar.

Practicum (PREP) program is designed to introduce young
people to the discipline of research as well as the profession of
child and adolescent psychiatry by having them participate in
research activities prior to their advancing to graduate school.

Matthew Chase, T’13: interned with Global Health Policy Center in the Center for Strategic and International
Studies; drafted research-based memos concerning HIV/AIDS policies, compiled briefing guides for
international CSIS delegations; authored blog posts for International AIDS Conference in Washington, DC
Raisa Chowdhury, T’15: independent DukeEngage experience aboard “Friendship” in Bangladesh; engaged in
research, observation, shadowing, and clinical assistance in developing settings; immersive cultural experience
Katie Murphy, T’13: Oncology/Design for Launch Marketing and Sales Intern for AstraZenica; synthesized
marketing research to develop marketing plan for drug (2015 launch); led brainstorm sessions with product
team to name drug for FDA submission; developed and trained employees in use of SharePoint site
Tess Shiras, T’13: interned with Partners in Health; researched low-income surgical standards based on WHO
recommendations; drafted sections for chief medical director’s book publication; established online community
forum for cross-site surgical teams
Victoria (Tori) Wilmarth, T’13: Center for Health Policy and Inequalities Research; developed questions and
recruited participants for focus group research and analyzed subsequent qualitative data for use in NIH grant
proposal; fostered partnerships with OVC Wellbeing and represented group at International AIDS Conference
