4. Overview
• Hummel Physical Therapy
is a smaller sized office
which allows for a more
personable relationship
with the therapists.
• It offers a wide variety of
exercise equipment for
patients to regain full
strength, balance, and
mobility throughout their
treatments.
• Located to the left is a
picture of the main
exercise roomThis is where patients would complete their
personalized exercise routine. Examples include:
therabands, weights, isometrics, and stretches.
5. Overview
• At Hummel Physical Therapy, patients received treatment in
two main areas.
• The types of treatments I observed included electrical
stimulation, ice/heat therapy, ultrasound, and manual
therapy which includes stretching and massaging.
This is where patients would perform
table exercises and where some
patients receive electrical stimulation.
Patients with shoulder and lumbar injuries would
receive treatment in a private room. Therapists
would also evaluate patients here.
6. Conditions Treated
• During my internship, I
was exposed to many
different injuries and
treatments. Here a
few of the most
common conditions I
dealt with on a day-to-
day basis.
• Rotator Cuff Repair
• Total Joint
Replacements
• Arthritis
• Back/Neck Pain
• Neuropathy
• Vertigo
• Sciatic Neuritis
• Nerve Impingement
7. Conditions Treated
• Even though I only
encountered a few
different injuries,
Hummel Physical
Therapy treats a
variety of conditions.
• A list is shown to the
right for all the
conditions that the
therapists treat.
8. Therapy Equipment
• While working throughout
my internship, I became
much more knowledgeable
of the different equipment
and modes of therapy.
• The most common types of
therapy equipment I saw
used most included:
• Electrical Stimulation Machine
• Traction
• Anodyne
• Whirlpool
• Iontophoresis
• Ultrasound
This is the Whirlpool machine used for patients with
mostly ankle/foot injuries. I was responsible for
setting up the machine and cleaning it after the
therapy was completed.
9. Therapy Equipment
Various equipment used by patients for
different physical therapy exercises.
Shown here is the pelvic traction machine.
This is a form of decompression therapy
which relieves pressure on the spine.
10. Duties & Roles

• Preparing patients for different therapies including anodyne treatment
• Preparing hot and cold packs for therapeutic use
• Set up machines and equipment for proper patient use

12. Goal 1: Familiarity of Exercises
• One of my primary goals when beginning this internship
was to familiarize myself with the various exercises for
different injuries.
• This is an important part of my internship because I help
patients complete their personalized exercise routine, and
in order to do that, I have to be very confident in my ability
to show and correct patients on proper form.
13. Goal 1: Continued
• On my first day as an intern, my preceptor gave me take
home exercises in order to learn them efficiently.
A take home shoulder exercise
program commonly used after
shoulder replacements
A take home exercise program
for patients who have chronic
low back pain
15. Project: Anodyne Research
• Before this internship, I had never
heard of anodyne treatment and
did not know how it worked or it’s
outcomes.
• One of my duties included
preparing patients for their
anodyne treatment and then once
finished, removing the treatment.
• During my first week, I learned
how to appropriately wrap
patient’s feet, calves, and hands
with plastic wrap to prevent
burning.

Anodyne pads along with the

16. Take Away
• Throughout this experience I have:
• Observed physical therapists in an outpatient setting
• Become more familiar with different therapy treatments
• Learned how to operate and set different equipment for proper use
• Gained more patient interaction in a therapy setting
• Learned time management skills needed as a therapist
• Become familiar with medical terminology and conditions
17. Conclusion
• I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to complete an
internship at Hummel Physical Therapy.
• I was able to observe patients with both acute and chronic
disabilities, as well as for post operative surgeries on knees
and shoulders.
• I was able to build close relationships with the therapists and
office staff, which made my experience even more enjoyable.
• This internship helped me to determine that pursuing a career
in either physical or occupational therapy is definitely the route
I will be taking after graduation.
• I was asked to continue working at Hummel Physical Therapy
throughout the remainder of the semester and through the
summer. I am excited to continue gaining knowledge and
making relationships with patients.
