2a Unit description and learning outcomes
This unit is an introduction to the principles of language learning and teaching. The
unit introduces students to different contemporary approaches to language learning. It
engages students in a discussion of the cultural and social contexts of language
learning and teaching. It focuses on the teaching of the macroskills: speaking, writing,
listening and reading, and the sub-skills: functions, grammar, vocabulary and
pronunciation.
On completion of the unit students will have:
(1) developed an understanding of the key concepts and terminology in the field of
language teaching methodology;
(2) achieved important insights into the learning and teaching of the macroskills and
subskills in different teaching contexts; and
(3) developed a range of effective workplace skills including problem-solving, team
work, and lifelong learning.
2b Generic skills
In addition to meeting the specific academic requirements of a particular degree, all
graduates are expected to acquire a range of generic skills or graduate attributes
through their program of study. Employers value these highly, and it is important for
your future career that you are able to identify your generic skills, and point to the
learning experiences that produced them. The table at 5a indicates which of the
generic skills in the University's complete list this unit addresses. The full description

General Studies
Rationale for proposed program:
10/1/14
Integrative Studies Proposal Rationale
I have chosen to major in integrative studies because I have always have had a passion for
teaching. I was previously a Physical Education Major; however, through my travels as a foreign
exchange student, and volunteering as an English Teacher in South Korea, I have gained a passion for
culture and language which exceeded my passion for Physical Education.
The career path I am striving to take is to become an ESOL teacher in the future, and integrating
my classes I have taken in foreign language and cultures, as well as my classes in Education, and Field
Experience as a Physical Education Teacher would help me learn and gain experience in teaching,
cultures, and language. These subjects combined in a general studies track would have me prepared to
become an ESOL teacher.
Taking classes in Portuguese up to the conversational level at KSU allowed me to learn what
techniques are most effective when it comes to language learning. It has allowed me to take a walk in
my future student’s shoes, understanding how it is to learn a new secondary language. In taking
practicum classes at KSU for Physical Education, I was able to gain field experience with students from
the Elementary, Middle, and High school level. The field experience I have had in Physical Education
and Health classrooms taught me techniques for classroom management, as well as how to write lesson
plans to prepare myself to teach a lesson. I have also taken classes such as Exploring Teaching and
Learning (EDUC2130) and Measurement and Evaluation (HPS4250) which have taught me the basics of
teaching, as well as effective ways to measure and evaluate student’s progress.
5. Updated: 4/9/2015 5:17 PM 5
Spending a semester as a foreign exchange student in Florianopolis, Brazil allowed me to learn
a new culture, a new language, and understand some of the challenges one could have being submersed
within a new culture. This allowed me to be put in the same shoes that a student taking English as a
Second Language could be in.
Volunteering to teach English as a Second Language in South Korea enabled me to acquire field
experience in the profession I strive to have after graduation. Having the field experience teaching
English classes to elementary school students was very beneficial to me, as I learned what the job
consists of, as well as what opportunities I would have as an ESOL Teacher.
Having a Bachelor’s degree in Integrative Studies would enable me to pursue my career as an ESOL
teacher. I will be able to apply for job opportunities to Teach English as a Second Language overseas, as
well as pursue a Master’s Degree in ESOL.
