For ocean science researchers, the success of data discovery revolves around the capability to ask complex questions of data centers like BCO-DMO. Our ability to accurately respond depends on our system's capability to understand the question, interpret its relevancy to what we know, and return those results in a way a human can digest.
As the needs for responding to the grand challenges of science become more interdisciplinary, data discovery will become more dependent on information from a variety of sources to enable researchers to reliably access the data they need. To do this effectively, all data and their metadata require context, cooperation and semantic interoperability.
This talk explores the current landscape of data discovery, the questions researchers ask of our software, how bad our software is at responding, and how Linked Data is a viable solution for improving those responses.

DataONE Webinar Series: Provenance and DataONE: Facilitating Reproducible Science
Abstract. Provenance is a form of metadata that describes the lineage and processing history of data and knowledge artifacts and plays an important role in many scientific applications and use cases. For example, an ecologist might want to combine different datasets for a study, but needs to know how the candidate datasets were derived. A climate scientist might need to document the processing history of climate model outputs to facilitate reproducibility. A natural history collection manager might want to run automated data curation tools on specimen collection data, but has to understand the proposed “repairs” before executing them. In all these and many other cases like these, provenance information plays a crucial role. In this webinar, we will first give an overview of the different types of provenance information and how they can be used, e.g., to facilitate reproducible science.
We then show how a DataONE user can search and navigate provenance information using the new UI currently under development in DataONE. After this user-oriented view on provenance, we finally take a look “behind the scenes” of the DataONE provenance technologies and present plans for future developments.
LOD for Numismatic LAM Integration
This is a presentation for Computer Applications and Quantitative Methods in Archaeology 2016 (Oslo, Norway). It discusses the implementation of Linked Open Data methodologies to integrate various aspects of the American Numismatic Society's holdings--coins, hoard and typology databases, digital archives, archival authorities, and digital library materials--to create a seamless portal for numismatic research. Through Nomisma.org and other external LOD services, these materials may be made available to the broader cultural heritage linked data cloud--in Pelagios, Social Networks and Archival Context, etc.

It allows forms to be defined using XML and includes features like XPath validation, manipulating complex XML models, and interacting with REST services. XForms processors handle rendering forms and submitting data based on XForms instructions. This allows separating models, views, and control logic for web forms.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
