A vibrant economy requires a strong middle class. Middle class values revolve around
personal dedication to self-improvement through hard work and deferment of immediate
gratification. American middle class values also include the willingness to collaborate
with others to achieve common goals.

Are young people of America finding appropriate role models with traditional sources
such as parents, sports figures, politicians, and movie stars?

If the traditional sources of role models are found wanting, where can young people find
the role models they need?

“Inside Leadership” is a national media program that contributes to a strong U.S. middle
class by using the power of social media to introduce children and young adults to role
models they have never met but might wish to admire.

We call such role models Self Made Leaders.

At the end of every program, we want at least one person to think, “That leader grew up
in circumstances more difficult than the situation I am facing today. That leader isn’t
smarter than me. And they are successful today. I can do this!”
HISTORY OF ‘INSIDE LEADERSHIP’

‘Inside Leadership’ is a program arm of the Center for Innovation & Change Leadership
(CICL).

The Center for Innovation & Change Leadership (CICL) is a global nonprofit housed in
Boston’s Sawyer Business School at Suffolk University in Boston. Its mission is to
promote collaboration and innovation as critical tools of social change.

CICL programs include the Global Leadership in Innovation & Collaboration Prize, given
to companies that inspire others. The 2010 winner is Xerox Corporation.

Other CICL programs include research about innovation and collaboration plus a unique
educational certificate/degree program between Suffolk University and Synectics.

For more information about CICL at Suffolk University:

                http://www.suffolk.edu/business/8149.html

The live ‘Inside Leadership’ audience consists of 60 Suffolk University freshmen. Many
of these freshmen are first in their families to go to college and come from around the
world.

                    INSIDE LEADERSHIP PROCESS

Each month we produce one 45 minute program on mp3 and distribute the mp3s
through social media, e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin.com. Our audience also
distributes the programs to their friends around the world. MP3s are also housed at the
CICL site on Suffolk.edu.

‘Inside Leadership’ host Dr. Laurence Stybel conducts a 20 minute in-depth interview
with each guest about his/her life. The next twenty minutes focuses on questions
students ask the Leader. It is the live Student/Leader interactions that are the most
stimulating.
Our aspiration at Inside Leadership is to develop a global data based housed at
Suffolk.edu and available to all. Young people will be able to search the database for
specific role models that fit their unique life circumstances. For example, “I am a black
unwed mother living in an urban environment. I want to hear the story of someone
similar to me who has ‘made it.’”

Programs are taped at the Modern Theater in the heart of the Boston Theater District. It
is near the Taj Hotel (Formerly Ritz Carleton Hotel) on the corner of Avery and
Washington Streets.

                     VALUE PROPOSITION FOR GUESTS

Guests of Inside Leadership might see the benefit of our mp files and (later) video to
attract investors, inspire customers, and attract talent. We see distribution of mp3 files
as an excellent addition to a standard employee orientation program.

Guests may bring video production capabilities and photographers if they wish.

We encourage guests to nominate their customers or employees as Self Made Leaders.

Beyond the one hour appearance, some company leaders might want to have their
brand associated with the Center for Innovation and Change Leadership and the
concept of Self Made Leader. We are an appropriate alliance for any company whose
future depends on a vibrant middle class or where the company wishes to make a
statement about the importance of innovation/collaboration for its success.

Previous guests include:

President of one of the nation’s leading health care HMOs and a national figure
in electronic medical records. He began his career as a Chicago high school
graduate who found a job as an orderly in a community hospital.

President of a college whose father was a poor farmer in Puerto Rico. The family
immigrated to New York City. There was a strong drug culture in the
neighborhood and his brother was arrested for pushing drugs. The President
would hide books he took from the library in order to avoid being beaten up by
peers who might catch him reading.

President of a global professional services firm and a national expert on
corporate governance. She is author of several articles on leadership that have
been published in HARVARD BUSINESS REVIEW. Her mother died at age 13
and her father became depressed. She had to take care of her father. Her
father later refused to provide financial support for her to attend college on the
grounds that women should be teachers, nurses, or mothers.
