Editor's Notes

  1. Welcome students and introduce yourself (name, position, where you studied abroad, when and how long) Make a joke. Ask a question. Connect with students. “Hello, My name is ____________________. I am a peer advisor at the SDSU Study Abroad office. I studied abroad in __________, during the _____ 20___ semester (year, summer, etc.)” Explain the International Student Center (short introduction of the three offices): - Study Abroad Office = support to outgoing students planning to study/intern/research abroad (attendance you are speaking to!) International Student Services = support for international students earning a degree or on exchange (mainly visa and regulatory information) International Student Programs = organizes events and programs for international degree and incoming exchange students Passport Office = students and general public can apply for U.S. passports https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWDrbiSdU0c (Amsterdam) ? ? You should save them all in a playlist on the study abroad Youtube account for the Info Sessions and just let it run until the session starts.
  2. “Welcome” in different languages allows the student connect if they have studied a foreign language, and to realize that the language difference is a huge first impression when arriving in a host country. They might want to learn a new language, which will qualify them even more for a scholarship or study abroad in a non-traditional location. Mention main points of what we will be discussing today in this Information Session. Remind students that they can take pictures w/their phones or request a copy of the presentation by emailing StudyAbroad@mail.sdsu.edu
  3. Transition Slide: “Now we are going to cover the Benefits of Study Abroad…”
  4. Go through each point on the slide. If you have examples feel free to use them. Let students know that thinking about these different points will help them with the personal statement they turn in with their study abroad application and narrowing down program choices. Stress that studying abroad is more than just visiting another country…it’s about maximizing the experience professionally and personally while fulfilling academic needs. Fun Fact: Only about 2% of U.S. college students study abroad! You are already a step ahead of peers! (Returnees are twice as likely to find a job within 12 months after graduating.) WHY STUDY ABROAD When studying fine arts abroad you will experience a nation’s culture through the creative lens of a current or former inhabitant of that country. This will not only give you an idea of the sociopolitical issues faced by a particular country through history, but it will also allow you to view the art as it is intended to be seen – in person. Viewing art in its most organic environment is to see it within its intended context, which is live in person in a museum, art gallery, theatre, music hall, or other art venues. The reaction or interpretation of art can be greatly influenced by the context in which it is presented, which is why studying the arts in its most natural habitat is more fulfilling than in the classroom.
  5. SDSU offers study abroad programs on all of these continents! Mention that all of the pictures are from SDSU students that studied abroad in the past. This could be them in the future! Give quick vivid examples of possibilities: You could walk the colonial streets of Southern Mexico, you could ride the “Tube” in London, take a ferry in Istanbul, hike the Inca trail…visit ancient temples and modern shopping malls in India… **Try not to stereotype the destination or activities**
  6. Introduce alumni, if present. If no alumni is present, YOU can briefly answer the questions.
  7. Transition Slide: “Now we are going to cover the Factors to Consider before Studying Abroad…”
  8. There are many factors that you should consider when you are choosing a program. Here are some of the most important factors: Meet your Academic Needs When studying abroad, the first thing you want to consider is your academics. Will the program offer what you need in order to graduate? Remember this is “studying abroad,” not a vacation Fulfilling international experience requirement Is studying abroad required by your major or minor? If so, make sure to check with your international coordinator or academic advisors in your departments to see if the study abroad program you chose would fulfill the requirement. Types of classes: major, minor, GE What type of courses do you need or want to take abroad? Thinking about this may help you decide on a university abroad. GE’s are usually more flexible, so it is a good idea to save some and take those while abroad. Classes in English vs. foreign language Most of our programs offer classes taught in English. However, there are some universities especially some in Spain, France, and Italy where most classes are taught in the native language. Language requirements If the program you choose offers classes taught in another language, then be aware that language prerequisites, ranging from one to six semesters of college-level proficiency, or the equivalent, are required in that host language. Credit type and grading type vary by program Transfer credits and Credit/ No Credits do not count towards the SDSU cap. Even though you are only allowed to take 9 Units Credit/No Credit at SDSU, if those credits come from a study abroad program you are allowed to exceed the limit of 9 units. Same counts for the 70 Units Transfer credit limit. ASK AN ADVISOR FOR MORE INFORMATION or VISIT THE ACADEMIC ADVISING OFFICE once you know the program you will attend Program dates (in relation to SDSU) Not every academic calendar in every country matches with SDSU Pay close attention to the beginning and end dates of potential programs. If there is overlap with the SDSU calendar, you may have to consider going a different semester or for the whole academic year.
  9. Read through each point and include personal experiences where applicable. Do not minimize decision to pursue short-term program, but discuss potential advantages of both long and short term.
  10. Transition Slide: “Now we are going to cover the different Program Types available for Studying Abroad…”
  11. Clarify which office manages the different study abroad programs. Regardless of program, ALL students are welcome to the SDSU Study Abroad Office. Later in the process, they can meet with the other offices if they choose to pursue programs not managed by the Study Abroad Office. We will go into more detail about the programs in the following slides.
  12. Touch on each point. You can do most SDSU exchange programs for either a semester or an academic year These are direct exchanges that SDSU has with individual exchange partner universities in different countries. This means that they send us one student and we send them one student so this affects how competitive the programs are. On these programs, you are integrated into the university life as best as possible so you will take courses with local students, as well as other exchange students from the U.S. and other countries. Payment: On the SDSU Exchanges you will pay your normal SDSU tuition and campus fees here to cover a student coming from that university, and they do the same at their university for you. Most SDSU Exchange programs have a minimum GPA requirement of 2.5 but there are some more competitive programs that require a 3.0 All of the courses you take on these exchange programs (for most programs) are considered resident credit so they will appear on your transcripts with our course numbers. All courses are posted as Credit/No Credit (for most programs) but these programs are approved to exceed your Credit/No Credit caps Most programs are open to a wide range of majors but there are some programs that are geared to more specific majors The application deadline for Fall is February 20th for most programs while the priority deadline for Spring is September 20th.
  13. Touch on each point. All academic year programs...The CSU subsidizes these programs to encourage students to take full advantage of the cultural immersion from academic year (two consecutive semesters). The CSU International Programs are the system wide programs that students from any Cal State student can apply for. The structure of the programs vary according to the location, but on most programs you are enrolled in regular university classes with local students and integrated into university life as best as possible. However, there are a few programs that are geared specifically for CSU or other international students, especially on the learn language programs. There are some programs that offer a wide range of majors but some programs only offer specific majors so please pay attention to the academic fields offered on each program. It is also important for applicants to the United Kingdom that you notice that you are applying for a specific major, not a particular university. Some programs do have preparatory language and culture courses that you are required to participate in prior to the beginning of the normal semester so you may have to go abroad in the end of the summer. Payment: While on the CSU International Programs, you will pay your normal State University tuition fees, plus a study abroad fee that is similar to your SDSU campus fees. The minimum cumulative GPA requirement for most programs is 2.75, but there are some more competitive programs that require a 3.0 You will receive resident credit for these programs, which means that the courses will be posted on your SDSU transcript with the letter grades that you earn. Your GPA will be affected. The application deadline for most CSU International Programs is February 1st, but there are some programs in the southern hemisphere that have a May 1st deadline.
  14. Touch on each point. ISEP offers semester, academic year and summer programs The International Student Exchange Programs, or ISEP, is a consortium or group of universities in which SDSU is a member. ISEP allows us to send students to more countries and universities that we don’t have direct exchanges with. On ISEP Programs, they try to integrate you into regular university life and courses as best as possible so in most cases, you will be taking classes with local students. Payment: For ISEP exchange programs you will pay your normal SDSU tuition and fees, plus housing and meal plan for on-campus accommodation, which covers an incoming exchange student. Those students have paid to cover you at their university. In addition to the ISEP exchange programs, they also offer ISEP Direct, which allows you to apply for the program and pay special fees through ISEP that go directly to the host university. The fees vary by program and location and in some instances, can be less expensive than an Exchange program. Some ISEP Direct programs may be cheaper Out-Of-State students paying a higher tuition here at SDSU. Some ISEP Direct programs include both tuition and housing. For others you only pay tuition and then find housing on your own with help from the university. Since the fees are paid to another university, SDSU accepts that coursework as Transfer Credit. You can use all your financial aid except work study, but you will have to complete an additional contractual agreement form. Also, VA benefits/CalVet are not applicable for ISEP Direct. The minimum cumulative GPA requirement for ISEP Programs is 2.75 Most of the programs offer a wide range of majors but there are some programs that are more limited and offer fewer academic fields. The application deadline for the Fall semester is February 1st and the deadline for Spring semester is August 15th. The deadline for Summer programs is March 1st, but there may be some variation with certain programs.
  15. Touch on each point. Although SDSU has many programs, we realize that we cannot meet the needs of all students so you are welcome to participate in independent or non-SDSU programs. There is a wide range of independent programs offered by provider organizations and other universities. They offer different locations, universities, academic fields and lengths of programs so please do a lot of research and keep in mind the factors to consider when choosing a program. The SDSU Study Abroad office can provide you some administrative support to ensure that you get academic credit and use your financial aid, but you need to work directly with the provider to get advising on program requirements, fees, courses offered and application deadlines. You can use your financial aid but you will need to submit an additional agreement form.
  16. There are also some limited possibilities of going abroad with a professor for a semester. These programs are NOT run through the College of Extended Studies Faculty-led programs. Contact the professor directly for more information (typically found on flyers around campus)
  17. Read through information on the slide and mention that internships: You can also participate in an internship abroad. These internships are available during the academic year, semester, summer, or winter breaks. You will get hands-on experience in a professional field that fits your academics, skills, and interests Internships are good opportunities to gain practical or professional experience in an international context, better understand a workplace in another country, and make professional contacts/networks potentially useful upon graduation You may be able to earn academic credit for an internship abroad, simply contact your academic advisor for approval Please check the Aztecs Abroad website for a full list of providers, and important deadlines.
  18. Transition Slide: “Now we are going to cover the Financial Aid & Scholarships available for Studying Abroad…”
  19. Program Costs SDSU programs are generally affordable. In fact, on many programs you will pay the same or even less than it would be to study here for a semester or year. However, there are some locations that are more expensive due to a higher cost of living (I.E. Tokyo and Paris) Budget for additional costs Make sure that you take into consideration all factors when budgeting for a program, including flight, insurance, passport, visa, traveling and personal expenses, etc. Financial Aid You can use all financial aid that you receive at SDSU except work study. Please work with the Financial Aid Office to determine how your aid package applies to these programs. There are also a lot of scholarships available for studying abroad so please apply for as many as possible. Talk to Financial Aid for their recommendations. Please be aware that Financial Aid disburses your awards when the SDSU semester begins so you should go abroad prepared to cover your own expenses until your financial aid is disbursed.
  20. Read through information on the slide and mention that there are many other scholarships available out there. Be sure to apply for the Associated Students Study Abroad Scholarship because it’s based on a student fee you are already paying! Gilman Scholarship is great opportunity for all Federal Pell Grant recipients who are U.S. citizens studying abroad for at least 28 days Critical Language Scholarship (funded by U.S. Dept of State) great opportunity for full-funded program to intensively study a critical-need language Boren Awards great opportunity if interested in critical-need languages and career in federal service (working for the government). View a full list of scholarships on our website and in Aztecs Abroad.
  21. Mention that we are now going to go over how to Research, Create A Profile, Search Programs, and Apply
  22. We want students interested in doing a program abroad to take responsibility for their experience so the next step is for you to do some research about all the programs and narrow down your choices. Visit the Study Abroad Website Click on “Process” Click on “Getting Started” for list of first steps including creating Aztecs Abroad profile and searching for programs
  23. Students don’t need to be logged in to their profile to search programs; however, if they are logged in, their profile must be completed in order to search programs, OR, simply log out and click the “Search Programs” button on the main menu screen. It is better to search with fewer criteria in order to get the most options possible. Term is not necessary to put in while doing a search.
  24. Go step by step how to complete the profile. The last step of the profile will ask whether or not the student met with an advisor, which has to be checked off by one of our advisors. To do so please make an appointment to see an advisor or come in during walk in advising. Additional features are available to students once they log into their account (as shown on the second screen shot)
  25. Touch on each point. Explain Study Abroad walk-in and scheduling procedures Study abroad office is the first gateway into study abroad office. They can talk to you about any program your interested in. NOTE: Tell them that Study Abroad Advisor are NOT academic advisors
  26. Research academics/classes available at host institution(s) before meeting with academic advisor Meet with your major/minor department academic advisors and/or International Coordinators to discuss courses (stress student needs to bring them list of classes, preferably w/course descriptions, available from the host school’s website – in most cases.)
  27. Clarify each application process for each program type (stressing that most have a two-step application process: Aztecs Abroad + … ) Emphasize in most cases students must complete BOTH Aztecs Abroad preliminary application and host institution or other external application Aztecs Abroad main place for SDSU staff to track progress and know where students are located
  28. What will students need to submit with application? Point out the importance of choosing the correct term, first choice school, and that only one application can be submitted per term. Personal Statement Visit the Writing Center, Love Library (LLA) 1103 for assistance or trusted faculty Letters of Rec (how many?) No Academic Advisors, Graduate Teaching Assistants, etc.
  29. Touch on each point. Add in experiences if applicable. Transcripts must be in a sealed envelope that is mailed to their home address and delivered to our office personally. DO NOT SEND TRANSCRIPTS TO THE STUDY ABROAD OFFICE BECAUSE THEY COULD GET LOST. Housing Arrangements – students should think about the length of their lease here in SD before signing for the time they want to be abroad; also, there are sources they can tap in to sublet their apartments, etc. (Facebook, GAA, etc.)
  30. Mention each point ****Update Logo GAA: Great way to get involved on campus and meet like-minded people who are interested in exploring the world and is a great resource for personal experiences and country specific information. Once they know where they want to go abroad and get accepted into their program GAA members are paired with international students from their host county so they’ll know a local student when they travel abroad.
  31. Stress each of the four points, IN ORDER: 1. No student should come next door after the Info Session. Even if they know where they want to go, they need to call the office to schedule an appointment or come back another day. (We need to enter that they’ve attended the Info Session in Aztecs Abroad first anyway to mark that they met that requirement.) 2. DO YOUR RESEARCH AT HOME! Narrow your choices: country, school, program type, etc. 3. Finish your Aztecs Abroad profile. You CANNOT meet w/an advisor until you complete it. Must also add a portrait style photo of yourself. 4. Once 1-3 are done, call or visit the office to make an appointment. You can ask Peer Advisors many questions, saving you time waiting for an advisor. Otherwise, schedule an appt. or come during walk-ins. THE END! “Thank you for coming!”
