The document discusses the author's interest in fish in the Mekong River from a food-poverty-environment perspective and questions around fish yields, demands, threats and research gaps. It notes that fish provide important food and livelihoods but yields are unclear and may be threatened by dams and other changes, and more study is needed on trends, demands, sustainability and management opportunities.
The document summarizes research from the Centre for Management Buyout Research on the impact of private equity investors on portfolio companies. Some key findings include:
1) Buyouts generally improve operating profitability and productivity compared to non-buyouts in the first few years. However, more recent public-to-private deals have not shown as high returns.
2) Private equity backing leads to refocusing, divestment, and higher entrepreneurial actions like new product development compared to non-buyouts. This drives improved growth and investment.
3) Active private equity firm monitoring and experienced industry-focused boards play an important role in creating value through strategy development and timely restructuring of distressed firms.

This document discusses using bivariate counting processes to model risk from correlated catastrophic events like earthquakes. It provides motivation for why correlated risks are important from examples of large earthquakes triggering aftershocks and increased seismic activity near the main shock. Specifically, it examines using bivariate counting processes to model the number of earthquakes before and after a major earthquake, which shows a significant increase in seismic activity for a few rupture lengths around the main shock.

- Retail supply grew slightly while occupancy rates declined. Rents varied significantly by location.
- Hotel performance weakened with lower RevPAR across all hotel grades.
- The apartment sales market saw continued growth in primary and secondary unit supply.

The document discusses concepts related to stationary and non-stationary time series data. It provides examples of time series data that are non-stationary, exhibiting changing means and non-zero correlation over time, as well as examples of stationary time series with constant means and zero correlation as time increases. The document also discusses techniques for identifying non-stationary processes, such as examining correlograms, and formal unit root tests to establish the stationarity of time series data.
The document summarizes a study on seasonal patterns of nitrogen retention in a restored tidal freshwater stream. It found that the stream annually retained a small percentage of nitrogen inputs through assimilation into biomass. Nitrogen retention was highest in late fall and winter when primary production and tidal exchange were lowest. Retention decreased in spring and summer due to increased tidal flushing and primary production supporting higher microbial respiration, resulting in a net release of nitrogen. Controlling factors included tidal exchange volume, areal inundation, and nutrient availability varying with season.

The Changing Battlefield for Freedom OnlineTim Hwang
This document discusses the changing landscape of digital freedom and challenges faced by advocates. It covers topics like copyright, cloud computing, privacy, interoperability, and efforts by groups like the Electronic Frontier Foundation to promote access to knowledge and an open internet. This document discusses using graph matching for classifier adaptation across different image acquisition conditions. It presents an example where illumination changes between image times t1 and t2 result in shifts in the data distributions that can reduce classifier performance. The method proposes matching graphs constructed from vector quantized representations of images t1 and t2 to find a local transformation that better aligns the distributions. This adaptation approach improves transfer learning from t1 to t2 compared to direct classification, demonstrating the potential of graph matching for domain adaptation problems.

This document summarizes a presentation on bivariate count processes for modeling earthquake frequency. It includes two figures: one showing the time and distance distribution of large aftershocks from major earthquakes, and another showing increased earthquake rates in the 15 seconds following a large quake. The motivation section cites a study finding increased regional seismic hazard within 2-3 rupture lengths of a mainshock, but no significant global increase.

Fabular Frames and the Four Ratio ProblemMajid Iqbal
Digital, interactive art showing the struggle of a society in providing for its present population while also saving planetary resources for future generations. Spread across several frames, the art is actually the rendering of real and speculative data. The stereographic projections change shape in response to prompts and provocations. Visitors interact with the model through speculative statements about how to increase savings across communities, regions, ecosystems and environments. Their fabulations combined with random noise, i.e. factors beyond control, have a dramatic effect on the societal transition. Things get better. Things get worse. The aim is to give visitors a new grasp and feel of the ongoing struggles in democracies around the world.
Stunning art in the small multiples format brings out the spatiotemporal nature of societal transitions, against backdrop issues such as energy, housing, waste, farmland and forest. In each frame we see hopeful and frightful interplays between spending and saving. Problems emerge when one of the two parts of the existential anaglyph rapidly shrinks like Arctic ice, as factors cross thresholds. Ecological wealth and intergenerational equity areFour at stake. Not enough spending could mean economic stress, social unrest and political conflict. Not enough saving and there will be climate breakdown and ‘bankruptcy’. So where does speculative design start and the gambling and betting end? Behind each fabular frame is a four ratio problem. Each ratio reflects the level of sacrifice and self-restraint a society is willing to accept, against promises of prosperity and freedom. Some values seem to stabilise a frame while others cause collapse. Get the ratios right and we can have it all. Get them wrong and things get more desperate.
