Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammatory condition of the gastrointestinal tract that includes Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. It is characterized by the infiltration of immune cells in the gut mucosa that generate lesions by releasing pro-inflammatory molecules like cytokines. While the exact causes are unknown, IBD results from genetic and environmental factors interacting to cause an abnormal immune response. There is no cure as the triggers are still being identified, so current treatments aim to suppress inflammation, but have limited efficacy and side effects. Developing safer and more effective therapies is a priority, and plant extracts show promise as they can modulate inflammatory proteins implicated in IBD.
