Editor's Notes

  • #3 There are significant considerations that organizations must face regarding their technology. This presentation will highlight the Duration of Copyright Law and share its significance for organizations to consider.
  • #4 The Duration of Copyright Law states that copyright in a work created on or after January 1, 1978 shall endure for the duration of the life of the author and upon the author’s death, the copyright shall endure for an additional 70 years (United States Copyright Office, n.d.). This type of protection is important for businesses to know so that they can keep account of the dates of the protected works.
  • #5 In this scenario, if a business has a piece of copyright work that is protected until 2049, having an alert that would notify the leader about the expiration of the copyright would allow the business to file the appropriate application with the United States Copyright Office to acquire the rights to the copyright. If the technology does not provide a notification to the organization that the copyright will expire, the piece of work would become public domain and someone else such as a competitor could acquire the rights and then require the organization to pay for the use of the work. Therefore, when using a copyright protected piece of work for an intricate part of the organization’s branding or marketing, having the proper provisions in place would alleviate the organization of potential unrest that could occur from an expired copyright protected piece of work.
