Inadequate post-installation care
All Coolabah varieties are tough as nails, self-repairing, and have low water requirements.
That said, turf is a living thing and it does require care. For a great looking lawn, you can’t take
a completely ‘set and forget’ approach.
In the first 2-3 weeks after installation, water as instructed by your Coolabah Turf rep. After
15-20 days your turf will have established itself and you can give it a light mow (be sure the
mower doesn’t cut too deeply). If in the first 3 weeks any areas become discoloured, give
those areas a little more attention with the hose.
New lawns should be watered at least 3 times per day (ideally morning, lunch and evening).
Between 2-3 months after installation, a regular fertilizing program must begin. This will help
you to use less water, make the turf hardier with a deeper grass colour, and will provide
greater resistance to pests and disease.
Here is Coolabah’s annual turf management guide:
• Fertilize your new lawn 5-6 weeks after installation.
• September: Fertilise - Critical to help your lawn recover from winter.
• October: Fertilise
• November: Optional preventative insecticide application.
• November – February: Optional dethatch if your lawn starts to feel a bit spongy.
Fertilise after dethatching to enhance your lawn’s speed of recovery following
dethatching.
• April: Fertilise - Critical to prepare your lawn for winter conditions.
• May: Fertilise
• June: Seasol - A plant conditioner to help protect your lawn from frost and promote
winter colour retention.
• July: Seasol
• August: Seasol
This is a guide only. If your lawn incurs any additional stress it may require further
management.
