In4Art Features is a talkshow in which we bridge the world of art and technology: how do both make the world curious and try to show a glimpse of what can be expected? How do they influence one another and what impact does it create?
This first session focused on the more applied field of design and start-ups. We introduced Design Column #12 of museum Boijmans van Beuningen and had a Q&A with design curator Annemartine van Kesteren.

EUNOIA was a stARTup Exhibition held at the In4Art Project Space from November 4th-26th. It featured the first solo-show by Dutch artist Iwan Smit (1989). This exhibition took place as part of the In4Art stARTup philosophy and part of the career development support for Iwan Smit. In4Art actively co-produces and curates the exhibition. A presentation highlighting different quotes and thoughts that are linked to the mission and vision of In4Art. If you want to know more or get involved, visit an In4Art Features or join the Open Collection.
This talk show was based on the exhibition in the Kunsthal: The Museum of Everything. We will take you on a journey; opening unprecedented stories from unconventional creators. What happens when artists start to ‘think outside the box’? What are 'outsider' artists and when can art be considered art?
One says ‘a picture tells more than a thousand words’, but what if the story behind the picture makes you understand what you see.
In the 'Art of Storytelling' we challenge all to become art detective and find the overlap with the 'outliers' in the world of business and start ups. We trigger you to unleash your imagination and appreciate an artist’s fascination.
Our guest will be Kati Wieg, initator of the Dutch national Outsider Art Manifestation and Art historian with more than 20 years of experience in the world of Contemporary Art.
To get acquainted with the world of start-ups and what the different facilities and options are in the Metropolitan Region Rotterdam The Hague. The Metropolitan Start-up scouts within the region and opens the YES!Delft knowledge and network. Where do start-ups get their inspiration? Technology, art, nature, every day problems? What are success stories and lesson's learned? What kind of programs and support is offered?
When pitching, keep in mind the conditions and building blocks. It is about creating a story covering the pain, problem, product and promise. Don't forget to integrate a call to action and adjust your pitch for each new audience. In the Pitch Workshop, we handled various exercises: zoom into the problem, explain your product to your grandmother or stress the added value.

How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

Art & Science interact since the 16th century
De anatomische les van Dr Nicolaes Tulp
1632
Rembrandt
Within the seventeenth century a huge epistemic shift led to a revised understanding of color in nature and color in art. At the same time that radical changes occurred in theories of vision, matter, and the sensible qualities, artists and scientists shared an interest in colors as paint or natural phenomena. At the end of the sixteenth century, for example, natural philosophy and anatomy began to interact significantly on questions of color, vision, and the eye, while anatomists and artists worked together to produce anatomical engravings and paintings. Scientists, on the other hand, visited painters in their workshops and showed interest in their practical knowledge of color preparation and color mixture.

Mouse cells, firefly DNA, metal, glass
Gas lamps in 1870, incandescent lights in the 1880s, florescent bulbs in the 1920s, LEDs in 2013 and living luminescent cells in 2050? Joris Laarman Labs already has a working model, but hopes the project only gets us thinking about the possibility of living appliances. A layer of hamster cells spliced with firefly DNA on the lamp shade to produce a bio-luminescent enzyme. Don’t worry, no hamsters were harmed in the process. Laarman modified embriotic hamster cells that scientists have kept alive for over 50 years.

Since 1990 I have been occupied creating new forms of life
Not pollen or seeds but plastic tubes are used as the basis material of this new nature, I make skeletons that are able to walk on the wind, so they don’t have to eat
Over time, these skeletons have become increasinly better at surviving the elements such as storm and water and eventually I want to put these animals out in herds on the beaches so they will live their own lives.

Video trailer: Maison a Bordeaux
A couple lived in a very old, beautiful house in Bordeaux. They wanted a new house, maybe a very simple house. They were looking at different architects. Then the husband had a car accident. He almost died, but he survived. Now he needs a wheelchair. Two years later, the couple began to think about the house again. Now the new house could liberate the husband from the prison that their old house and the medieval city had become. "Contrary to what you would expect," he told the architect, "I do not want a simple house. I want a complex house, because the house will define my world..." They bought land on a hill with panoramic views over the city.
The architect proposed a house – or actually three houses on top of each other. The man had his own 'room', or rather 'station': the elevator platform. The movement of the elevator continuously changes the architecture of the house. A machine is its heart.

NATURE, SOCIETY, TECHNOLOGY: reflections/ input of the artist
Logo designcolumn
http://fullgrown.co.uk/
With his Full Grown project, bio-designer Gavin Munro has taken a radical stance within the furniture industry. Instead of felling and transporting large trees and processing the wood to create individual objects, Munro trains the tree to grow into ready-made products. He harvests the chairs directly from his orchard. By eliminating several intermediate steps, he simplifies the production process and makes it more energy ef cient: he lets nature do most of the work. Munro calls it ‘mass production meets delayed gratification’. Mass production is still a long way off: a single chair takes between four and eight years before it’s ready to be sat on. Nonetheless, Munro sees this new approach as an eco-friendly and energy-efficient future for the furniture industry. The company will launch a series of pendant lamps in the spring of 2016.

Ecovative
Understanding that processing wood from planks to products incurs 50% to 80% of timber wastage during normal manufacture, Marjan van Aubel and James Shaw looked at ways of incorporating waste shavings into design using bio-resin. A curious chemical reaction occurs when it is mixed with the shavings, expanding it into a foamed structure. By adding colour dye and varied-sized shavings from different workshop machines, a colourful, lightweight and mouldable material was created, reinforced by the fibres in the hardwood shavings.
The porridge-like mixture of resin and shavings are applied to the underside of the chair shell by hand, building up the material wherever extra strength is required. The mixture then foams explosively to create its own exuberant form, anchored by the simple turned legs of American ash. This chair was developed with the support of the American Hardwood Export Council it was one of the first pieces of furniture to be subjected to Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), measuring its total environmental impact across its production and usage. The Well Proven Chair has been nominated for the Design of the Year 2013 Award and will be seen at the Design Museum in London.
