This chapter discusses how online communities have evolved from early text-based forums and chat rooms to more advanced virtual worlds with avatars. While these virtual spaces allow for new forms of online identity and interaction, they can also enable harmful behaviors like trolling if not properly moderated. The chapter argues online community designers need to focus on cultivating respectful dialogue through features that emphasize cooperation over competition or aggression.
