This document discusses using proportional hazards modeling (PHM) to optimize maintenance decisions for mining hoists based on oil analysis data and failure histories. The methodology combines hoist operational data, failure histories, oil analysis results, and maintenance records to build a PHM model that identifies key risk factors and their influence on equipment health. An economic model is then used along with the PHM risk model to determine optimal maintenance decision points that balance failure and preventative replacement costs. Implementing this condition-based maintenance strategy using PHM is estimated to result in potential savings for the mining operation.

Hoist: Major Project (a Photoshop script to convert PSD to web)Harsh Bhatia
A Photoshop script called HOIST converts PSD files into HTML and CSS code to transform designs into webpages. HOIST extracts information from PSD files and converts effects into equivalent HTML and CSS, combining it all into a static webpage design with no manual coding required. The script removes empty layers, creates separate folders for HTML and CSS files, links image files, and writes code for non-visible layers while assigning styles through classes to simplify scripting. HOIST is open source and supports Photoshop CS5+ on Mac OSX for automating webpage conversion from designs.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the study of intelligent machines and computer systems that can exhibit human-like intelligence. Some key applications of AI include planning, pattern recognition, robotics, and artificial neural networks. While today's AI systems can perform tasks like face recognition and machine translation, they still cannot understand language as robustly as humans or interpret arbitrary visual scenes. Future advances in AI may allow greater use of expert systems, AI research assistants, and machines that can pass the Turing Test.
Artificial intelligence in power systems Riyas K H
1) Artificial intelligence techniques like artificial neural networks, fuzzy logic systems, and expert systems can be applied to problems in power systems.
2) Artificial neural networks are useful for tasks like power system stabilization, load forecasting, fault diagnosis, and security assessment. They do not require extensive programming.
3) Fuzzy logic systems account for measurement errors and are used for stability assessment, fault diagnosis, and other applications. Expert systems use rules and facts to deduce conclusions.
In this presentation Mark Lane focuses on a project Optima has completed for a large paper-making company. The problem that the customer faced on the machine was a mixture of obsolescence and unreliability.
Optima improved the machine’s performance by at least 20% by completely re-designing four areas of its control system:
Drives and PLC control
Safety system
Pneumatics
Web tension control
How can you deal with Fuzzy Logic. Fuzzy logic is a form of many-valued logic; it deals with reasoning that is approximate rather than fixed and exact. In contrast with traditional logic theory, where binary sets have two-valued logic: true or false, fuzzy logic variables may have a truth value that ranges in degree
between 0 and 1
The document provides an overview of artificial intelligence, including its definition, history, approaches, tools for evaluation, applications, and predictions for the future. It discusses topics such as the traits of an intelligent system, methods like cybernetics and symbolic/statistical approaches, tools including search algorithms and neural networks, and applications in fields like medicine, robotics, and web search engines.
This document provides an overview of the key components of a drilling rig's hoisting system, including:
1) The derrick supports the hoisting system and provides height for lifting equipment in and out of the well.
2) The block and tackle system uses pulleys and wire lines to provide mechanical advantage, reducing the load on the derrick and fast line.
3) The drawworks provides power to reel in the fast line and lift equipment, with its power requirements calculated based on the load and line speed.
Fuzzy and Neural Approaches in Engineering MATLABESCOM
This document provides an introduction to a MATLAB supplement for the book "Fuzzy and Neural Approaches in Engineering". It describes MATLAB as an educational software package for technical computing. The supplement contains MATLAB code examples that demonstrate concepts from the book, such as neural networks, fuzzy logic, and hybrid systems. It is intended to help readers gain a practical understanding of implementing soft computing techniques in MATLAB.
This document provides an introduction to artificial intelligence (AI). It defines AI as a branch of computer science dealing with symbolic and non-algorithmic problem solving. The document discusses the evolution of AI from early programs in the 1950s to current applications in areas like expert systems, natural language processing, computer vision, robotics, and automatic programming. It also notes both potential positive futures where intelligent robots assist humans as well as potential negative outcomes if robots are used for anti-social purposes. The conclusion is that AI has increased understanding of intelligence while also revealing its complexity.
The document discusses artificial intelligence, including its history, applications, and languages. It provides an overview of AI, noting that it aims to recreate human intelligence through machine learning and problem solving. The document then covers key topics like the philosophy of AI, limits on machine intelligence, and comparisons between human and artificial brains. It also gives brief histories of AI and machine learning. The document concludes by discussing popular AI programming languages like Lisp and Prolog, as well as various applications of AI technologies.
Artificial intelligence is the study and design of intelligent agents, with no single goal. It aims to put the human mind into computers by developing machines that can achieve goals through computation. The origins of AI began in the 1940s with the development of electronic computers. Significant early developments included the first stored program computer in the 1950s, the Dartmouth Conference which coined the term "artificial intelligence" in the 1950s, and the development of the LISP programming language. In the following decades, AI research expanded and led to applications in fields like expert systems, games, and military systems. While progress has been made, the full extent of intelligence and the future of AI remains unknown.

2. Introduction
This presentation discusses work carried out at Minera
Collahuasi to improve the existing oil analysis program
currently undertaken for hoist systems.
Current practice for monitoring the health of equipment
is by examining trends in readings obtained from
condition monitoring.
Such an approach does not guarantee that the full
information-value contained in the readings is captured.
3. Methodology
This paper reports a new approach that uses a statistical
procedure, proportional-hazards modeling (PHM) to
identify the key measurements that should be used to
assess the true state of health of equipment.

system (CMMS) from MINCOM ELLIPSE there are
histories of hoist lifetimes.
Costs associated with failure and preventive removals
were also available.
Oil analysis results from a fleet of 9 shovels were
analyzed along with their respective failures and repairs
over a six year period.

17. How does data model hazard?
significant covariates.
EQUIPMENT FAILURE
Age Effect
Sample History History consists of:
•Beginning time
•Inspection results
•Ending time and reason
20. Optimal Hazard Level
Cp = Total cost of preventive replacement
Cf = Total cost of failure replacement
Cp = cost of manpower + cost of a new gear
US$ 0.25 M
Cf = cost of manpower + cost of a new gear + opportunity cost
US$ 2.3 M

22. Conclusion
The case study demonstrates the value of using the
PHM technique to assist maintenance professionals
to interpret condition data by identifying the key risk
factors and their relative influence on the health of
equipment.
Economic considerations were then blended with the
PHM risk model to identify the optimal decision
chart.
23. Potential Savings
The optimal decision model indicates that the
implementation of a Condition Based Maintenance
Strategy in these cases will result in more frequent
preventive replacements in order to avoid costly
failures.
The study then indicates that the implementation of the
decision chart would result in a cost reduction of 38%.
