This document presents a third order shear deformation theory to analyze flexure of thick cantilever beams. The theory uses a sinusoidal function in the displacement field to account for transverse shear deformation effects through the beam thickness. Governing equations and boundary conditions are derived using the principle of virtual work. Numerical examples of a cantilever beam with a cosine load distribution are presented and displacement, stress results are obtained in non-dimensional form. The results are discussed and compared to other beam theories to demonstrate the efficiency of the third order shear deformation theory.

Design strategies incorporate urban biodiversity, landscaping, and environmental considerations.
The document outlines lighting and acoustics analyses for two spaces - a children's playing area and computer lab - within a community library project. For the children's area, the daylight factor is calculated to be 12.8%, indicating a very bright space with potential glare issues. Perforated shading is proposed. The computer lab's daylight factor of 5.4% provides good lighting. Artificial lighting calculations for both spaces determine the number and layout of light fixtures needed to meet illuminance standards. Acoustic analyses include external noise levels and reverberation times.
This document summarizes a reaction paper about the article "Towards a Critical Regionalism" by Kenneth Frampton. It discusses how Frampton believes architects should consider the characteristics of the land and local climate when designing buildings. The placement of windows and openings can reflect the regional conditions, such as sun paths and wind directions. Using local materials can also express the regional culture through tactile qualities. Overall, critical regionalism is about giving buildings a distinct sense of place through consideration of the site context and local culture rather than creating placeless designs.
The document discusses how architects design buildings to shape the feelings and experiences of users, not just as physical objects. It notes that architects consider how forms, functions, and sensory elements like sound and smell can create different emotions. For example, the sound of falling water may create a relaxing feeling. The document also discusses how famous architect Zaha Hadid analyzes people's lives and environments to design spaces that address what is lacking and shape users' feelings. Finally, it argues that for architecture to be fully appreciated, people must transform their visual experiences of a space into spatial experiences through enjoying the forms and experiencing architecture personally.
This document provides a summary of the book "Semiotics and Architecture" by Diana Agrest and Mario Gandelsonas. It discusses how the book uses semiotics as a tool to break down existing ideologies and create new theories. Specifically, it explains that the book presents a 5-step method - ideology, arbitrary, value, sign, and theory - to challenge norms and think outside the box to address issues. While breaking an ideology is challenging, the outcome is improving solutions and developing new versions of theories that can replace old beliefs over time as eras change and theories may no longer apply.
Jane Jacobs criticized mid-20th century urban planning that diminished street life and sidewalk vitality. She advocated for "four generators of diversity" - mixed primary uses, small blocks, mixed building ages, and high concentration of people and buildings - to generate urban vitality. Diversity, including human, economic, and physical diversity, is key to a vibrant city according to Jacobs. While she makes good observations about street environments with mixed uses attracting continuous activity, increased surveillance is not a fully effective solution for safety and standardizing human behavior risks inefficiency.
