Ignite talk from DevOpsDays Pittsburgh 2014
I'm told DevOps isn't a title, team, or task, but (perhaps because my hiring manager trolled me by putting it in my title), people ask me how they can get DevOps, like it's a prize at the bottom of a cereal box. I'll give you the five-minute version of what I say when someone asks me how to make their sysadmin job description "more DevOpsy", what resources I suggest to fellow traditional sysadmins who want to try to DevOps up their skills, and how I have made peace with my erstwhile mortal frenemies who put the Dev in Ops.
Date Pickers are ubiquitous, but most of the time they’re the clunky, ugly, afterthought of our UI. jQuery UI Datepicker works for the basics, but to set a date range, add time ranges, and deal with monthly or quarterly dates, you’re going to need more horsepower.

We’ve been using MongoDB on EC2 for about a year now; our production deployment includes a 12-node cluster (4 shards x 3 replica sets) as well as several other non-sharded replica sets. (The sharded cluster used to be bigger, which, as it turns out, isn’t always better.)
Join us to benefit from our lessons learned, discuss what works and what doesn’t, and marvel at oddities we’ve encountered.
As much as we don’t want recruiters, marketing campaigns, and sales pitches defining devops, practitioners are more inclined to define what DevOps is not than what it is. Perhaps this is fitting, as DevOps began in the land of famed Belgian surrealist René Magritte. This meta-talk will examine the definitions and negative space around the non-definition of DevOps, through the filter of Magritte’s works.
Topics covered will include:
*views shifting over time, with examples from talks, podcasts, blog posts, and tweets
*where consensus and dissent exist, including such contentious topics as “enterprise DevOps”
* trends as evinced by divergent tribes in the similar and dissimilar communities active in this space
* the map-territory relation: the importance of words in a world structured by semantics
Part art history and part ethnography, this talk offers new views on some five-year-old questions.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love DevOps (DODSV2014)bridgetkromhout
I was a college-student BOFH, an ISP sysadmin, and an academic IT manager. If I wanted a curmudgeonly sysadmin, I could just look in a mirror. Most developers were unlikely to be granted root on any systems whatsoever, and servers were carefully hand-whittled works of art. You know, The Way Things Were.
Moving to a role doing operations at a developer-centric startup was both a culture shock and a great learning experience. I'll discuss what worked for me (and what was challenging!) in terms of my transition to a DevOps practice.
Spoiler alert: change is scary, but awesome developers on the team make it much easier for an old-school sysadmin to be assimilated into the DevOps of Borg. Wacky hijinx ensue, and there's a hilarious coda: as it turns out, having your startup acquired means that in IT's view, you're the cowboy now! All sorts of empathy potential!

Ideas can come from many different places, but how do we best turn these ideas into initiatives and ensure we are working on the right things at the right time? We tend to throw the idea around, discuss it with our team and management, and undertake a lot of analysis to decide if it’s worth spending time and money on. Unfortunately this approach means we have already spent a bunch of time and money, often without realising it!
A number of the early Agile approaches described a lifecycle for kicking off projects, but many of the newer and more popular approaches start with a backlog or an assumption that you are already building something. Go back to basics and look at different approaches for kicking off initiatives and the tools and techniques that make up what is often called the discovery, ideation or concept phase. If your team or organisation has too much work in progress or your pipeline is unclear, then learn (or re-learn) approaches to kicking off the right initiatives so you can ensure you are building the right thing!

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
