Hydrotherapy for animals must be distinguished from
aquatic therapy
3. Hydrotherapy
Aquatic therapy
Treadmill in water
Swimming
Refers to water-based
treatments or exercises of
therapeutic intent, in particular
for relaxation, fitness, and
physical rehabilitation.
Treatments and exercises are
performed while floating,
partially submerged, or fully
submerged in water.
The use of exercises in a pool as
part of treatment for conditions
such as arthritis or partial
paralysis.
Swimming
Icing
Soaking in hot or cold water
Movement of the
body in water
Despite the differences the are more or less
considers a lot alike, so much so that there
is not always a distinction between the two
Considered by some one in the same
Depending on who and
what
5. Provide relief from pain and stiffness caused by conditions
such as hip dysplasia, spinal injuries
Other reasons
Common in post-operative
recommendation for rehabilitation
Ligament repairs(ACL&TPLO)
Arthroscopic surgery
Hip replacement/femoral
head osteoectomy (FHO)
Ruptured disc/of spinal surgery
Bone or muscle injury
Arthritis
Hip/elbow dysplasia
paralysis
Degeneration
Myelopathy
Muscle atrophy
Weight loss
6. Hydrotherapy for large animals generally refers to horses.
Uses and reasoning
Swimming: for a lame of frequently used horses with a history
of lameness, or to help build muscle tone without causing
concussion from movement on a surface.
Icing: used to reduce swelling of a particular area, usually
the legs, the reduction of swelling will promote better
blood flow to the effected area for better healing
Soaking: the act of soaking is generally done with a hose. The
water is allowed to run on the effected area. This is usually done
using cold water. Running water helps promote better blood flow.
For use is cause that are less sever than the icing cases.
Horses that are used
for racing or
performance work
Any activity that can put
undo stress on legs joints
and the body are
generally prescribed these
treatments
7. Round pools: the horse descends in to a deep pool and
swims in a circle then back to the shallow end for exiting.
Straight deep pools: the horse descends into a deep pool,
they swim in place until done. When finished, are allowed to
swim forward to the shallow end with a ramp for exiting.
Treadmills: the horse is allowed to stand in the treadmill
while the water rushed past its legs, or the treadmill is
turned on and the horse is to walk against the current of
water produced by jets in the tank. (Used for resistance
training.)
8. Reduces swelling
and inflammation,
that can cause
pain and
unsoundness
Pain and
unsoundness will
limit his ability
and wiliness to
work
9. Promotes blood flow
and reduces swelling or
fill in the effected area
The reduction in swelling
allows the area to start
healing , this is essential to
the function and
soundness of the horse,
and may help him return
to his job.
10. Hydrotherapy is used for large and small animals
It is used to help with weight loss, building
muscles, low impact training and a form of
rehabilitation in animals after surgery or trauma
There are many forms of hydro, and each has its
specific purpose
It can reduce swelling and may help with motor
skills in injured animals to regained mobility
It is a drug free method of therapy
