This document projects the potential impacts of hydrofracking in Tompkins County, New York. It estimates that 39% of the county's land is leased for drilling. Using a methodology of identifying leased parcels and adjacent land that could support drilling units, it estimates the number of well pads that could be developed in each town, ranging from 1 pad in Southern Lansing to 44 pads in Groton. It also summarizes potential impacts such as use of farmland, water, chemicals, truck traffic, jobs, and environmental effects. The extent of drilling is uncertain and will depend on geology, economics, regulations, and other factors.

9. Hydrofracking Impact - Western PA Aerial photo studies show average of 8.8 acres per site: 3.1 acre pad, 5.7 acres access road, impoundment -26% of Tompkins County active farmland. 480 acre estimate is probably low, since a disproportionate amount of farmland likely to be impacted 9

11. Hydrofracking Impact -NYC-DEP Study estimates 167 tons of chemicals per well. Equals 334,000 pounds of chemicals mixed with water and sand, injected under high pressure to frack each well. -Over 10 years, amounts to 350,700 tons of chemicals used in Tompkins County. 701,400,000 pounds of chemicals. -NYS dSGEIS estimates flowback water at 9% to 35%. At 20%, would be 2.1 billion gallons of flowback to be disposed of over 10 years. 11

12. Hydrofracking Impact -NYC DEP Study estimates 1200 one way truck trips per well. The DEC dSGEIS estimates 900-1300 trips. -With 10 year buildout in Tompkins County, equals 252,000 one way trips per year. - At key intersections, trips would be doubled: loaded trip and empty trip. Total traffic experienced would be 504,000 trucks per year, almost double current 600,000 heavy truck trips each year in the county. 12

Hydrofracking Impact - PA Marcellus drilling study found 400+ people usually worked at each well, many just a few days, others longer. -Equivalent of 12 people working full time for a year at each well. (12 FTE’s) -Many workers from out of state, typically Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. -10 years buildout => 2520 jobs each year ; 4% of County’s current 65,700 employment 13
