Lansiran je bil 24. aprila leta 199 0 , da bi preko fotografij prodrli globje v vesolje in hkrati kot priprava na bodočo mednarodno vesoljsko postajo. Je valjaste oblike, dolžine 13,2 m, premera 4,2 m in mase 11,1 ton. Zgolj v času 0,1 sekunde pošlje prekrasne fotografije na Zemljo. Leta 2009 mu bodo podaljšali delovanje še za nekaj let.

Slika v ozadju je dvotedenska ekspozicija HST - posnetek galaksij 13 milijardi let v preteklost.
