HQ98 Complete (dragged) 1
1. Alarm Call, the now 15-year-old grey gelding
by Alami out of the Elliodor mare Liodora, was
trained by the late Buddy Maroun for seven wins
and multiple places, including graded stakes
places.
The good-looking gelding was a competitive
racehorse and was known (on more than
one occasion) to try to take a bite out of the
competition as they raced to the finish line!
HeisownedbyDeliaGrossandisshowjumping
and eventing with Justine Nell, and leading a
charmed life. Justine tells his story:
“Alarm Call is a magnificent snow-white 17hh
Thoroughbred gelding. He mainly did sprints
during his racing career, but at the age of seven
he broke his hip on the track and was hacked for
a year while he recovered. When we saw him it
was love at first sight. I couldn’t leave him alone
in the camp and spent two hours with him. A
week later he was ours.
Waltzing Home, the now 10-year-old mare by
Joshua Dancer out of the Fine Edge mare Flying
Home, was bred by Linda Garlicki and trained by
Michael Azzie. She had one win and two places
from 13 starts and retired in 2009. She is owned,
adored and ridden by Louise de Luca and has
turned into a lovely showjumper. She won the
SA Champion 1m showjumping for Gauteng and
was second overall.
“We were told he was a biter; apparently known
as Hannibal Lecter on the track as he would come
from behind and bite his opponents. This habit
is still with him, however at the age of 15 he acts
likeababywhohasteethingissues.Heconstantly
wants you to push his gums or hold his tongue,
which makes him drool with joy.
“We worked with him for a year and at his first
show he won both his jumping classes. From day
one he was just one of those special horses. We
decided to do some eventing with him to see how
he would hold up and he stunned us. He excelled
in eventing and loved the thrill of running at top
speed again.”
Justine adds that it hasn’t been smooth sailing.
Alarm Call has had several health issues,
including torn suspensories, and a number of
paddock accidents that left him requiring months
of rest. However, with love and care he’s back to
his old self in spite of veterinary prognoses to
the contrary.
“In January 2015 we got the go-ahead and
started jumping again, and he absolutely loves
the jumping. He is now back in the higher classes
andwinningalltheway.Wecontinuetoplaywith
his mouth and keep his busy mind occupied with
new things.”
