To start playing the drums, learn the names of the basic components which typically include a snare, two toms, a floor tom, bass drum, hi-hat, ride and crash cymbals. Take time to get comfortable with your drum set by adjusting it properly. When first practicing, play very simple beats and don't thrash randomly, as that sounds bad. After learning basics, consider joining a band or continuing to expand your skills and drum set.
