EMPLOYEE GOES
AGAINST ORDERS
New Hampshire’s first coronavirus patient shrugged off his quarantine
and went to an event in a different state — potentially exposing almost
200 people to the deadly illness
The Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center staffer showed symptoms of the
virus after returning from a trip to Italy and was told to stay home while
awaiting test results — which came back positive Monday, state health officials
said.
But three days earlier, he had ignored the instructions and gone to a party
over the border in Vermont,
About 175 people were at the bash, organized by Dartmouth’s Tuck
School of Business and held at The Engine Room in White River Junction,
right across the river from the New Hampshire hospital.

CAN A COMPANY NOTIFY
OTHERS IF AN
EMPLOYEE TESTS POSITIVE
"The U.S. work culture is such that at some companies you go to work
even if you are sick. It's either the expectation or a point of pride, and
that kind of organizational attitude can make it difficult," said Danielle
Ompad, an associate professor of epidemiology at the New York
University School of Global Public Health
Even employees who seem healthy should consider staying home given
that individuals with the virus may not display symptoms immediately, or
ever, experts said in California this week.
"If employees have symptoms, encouraging them to stay
home and not penalizing them in some way is the biggest
thing a company can do,"

HOW TO PREPARE
The overall risk to the general public from Covid-19 is still low,
according to top officials at the Health and Human Services
Department. Most people are unlikely to become infected
“You don’t need to take major steps to survive without electricity or water
(both should keep working just fine) but changing your habits and
shopping patterns and planning ahead can protect you and others.” In
short, preparation for a pandemic is a form of cooperation to reduce the
overall risk for others in society.
Dozens of studies show hand-washing can prevent life-threatening
diseases, and even save lives.
Don’t touch your face, particularly your mouth, nose, or eyes
Wash instead of sanitizing whenever possible

HOW WORKPLACES
SHOULD PREPARE
Chances are, if you work for a large company, you received an email like
one sent to Volkswagen employees Monday: Coronavirus concerns
mean some limits on business travel, everyone should remember to
"wash your hands frequently" and stay home if sick
Be Careful not to discriminate against Asian decent
employees
Consider paying employees (rather than requiring PTO or
unpaid leave) if an employee must self quarantine for 14
days
Onsite medical nurse to address flu like symptoms
Eliminate business travel
Scaring employees is not helpful

WHAT EMPLOYERS
SHOULD CONSIDER
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have labeled COVID-19
(the coronavirus) as a public health emergency.
BY THE
NUMBERS
The number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus has grown globally to near
108,000, with over 40 infected in the united states.
DUTY OF CARE
The Act’s “General Duty Clause” requires that employers provide “employment and a place
of employment which are free from recognized hazards that are causing or likely to cause
death or serious physical harm to [its] employees.
FROM THE EXPERTS
The CDC encourages employers to shore up their business continuity plans
in the event of a possible coronavirus outbreak in the U.S. As the duration
and severity of the coronavirus event is undetermined, employers should
make short and long-term plans of action.
