How do White People Live Safely in South Africa?
Ok, I am white, middle class and I don't live in a gated community or have security guards. I live in
Johannesburg as well
You just have to take precautions.
I have a palisade fence. A see through wall is much safer than a solid high wall because people can
see if someone is trying to break in.
On top of my palisade fence is razor wire.
I have an electric security gate and I lock this at night with a thick padlock.
Burglar bars on my windows and security gates on my doors.
Everything we do is "open" so that any would be assailants will be seen entering the property and be
seen in the property.
Secondly - you know where to walk and when to walk. If you see a suspicious character you avoid
them. You pick these things up and it's just second nature.
This works - we only had 2 guys jump our fence, they didn't rob us, they just wanted to get away
from the security companies chasing them (Oh yes ... security companies are a must, press a button
and they are there in 5 minutes)
