How can we rate home safes
1. How can we rate home safes?
Before you buy a home safe, you should be
familiar with the grading system to know how well
it would withstand attack. Home safes are graded
based on the cash and valuables rating, the level
of protection offered, and the fire-protection
rating.
Cash rating and valuable rating
This is the first information you should look for
while buying a home safe. This is the amount of
money that you can put in the safe that the
insurance company will provide cover for if the
money is stolen. If the cash rating is higher, the
protection offered by the home safe will also be
higher.
Home safes also have valuables rating. The
valuables rating will be 10 times higher than cash
rating, and varies from safe to safe.
2. Fire rating
Based on how much time the safe can resist fire,
they are given UL fire rating and a Class, which
means that the safe has withstood an internal
temperature of certain degree while subjecting it
to heat up to 2000°F.
1.Class 125: It means the safe can withstand an
internal temperature of 125°F and 80%
humidity.
2.Class 150: The safe can withstand an internal
temperature of 150°F and 85% humidity.
3.Class 350: The safe can withstand an internal
temperature of 350°F and 85% humidity.
Hour ratings
In addition to the Class, safes are given hour
ratings, which mean it can sustain that level of
protection for that specified period of time.
The UL Class fire ratings awarded to home
safes are:
1.1/2 Hour - UL class E - 350 Rated Safe
2.1 Hour - UL class D - 350 Rated Safe
3. 3.1 Hour Plus - UL class C - 350 Rated Safe
4.2 Hour - UL class B - 350 Rated Safe
5.4 Hour - UL class A - 350 Rated Safe
European grading system
This grading system will help you to find out how
secure the safe is and whether it offers the level
of security that you need for your valuables.
Insurers will provide you with insurance cover
that is equal to the Euro-grade rating given to
your home safe, which ranges from 0 to 6.
The highest rating awarded to a home safe is 6
If the home safe has a Euro-grade rating of six, it
is proof that the safe has the highest level of
resistance. Zero rating doesn’t mean that they are
not good. They are, in fact, good to store
valuables at home, and resist a certain level of
tampering.
4. The main ratings of residential home safes are:
1.Residential Security Container (RSC): The
rating shows that it can resist five minutes of
tampering.
2.B Rating: This is a general rating. The safe is
not subjected to any UL testing.
3.C Rating: This again is a general rating
awarded to any strong box, without any UL
testing.
4.Tool Resistant (TL-15): Combination safe
successfully resisted 15 minutes of attacks
with hand and electrical tools on the door and
front face.
5.TL-30: Combination safe successfully resisted
30 minutes of attacks on the door and front
face.
6. TL-15X6: Tool resistant for 15 minutes on all
six faces.
7.TXTL-60X6: Tool and explosive resistant for 60
minutes.
