NYCHA Infill Sites Presentation for Roundtable 4-10-13 (Washington Houses)NYCHA Nyc-Housing
This document summarizes a roundtable discussion about NYCHA's proposal to lease some of its land to private developers to build new residential buildings. NYCHA has an $13.4 billion capital need over the next 5 years but only $2.8 million budgeted for Washington Houses repairs. The land lease plan would generate $30-50 million annually for 99 years for capital improvements without increasing rents. Residents discussed the proposed development sites at Washington Houses, replacement of parking and community spaces, preferences for affordable units, and employment opportunities. Next steps outlined a request for proposals, environmental review, and construction timeline.
This document discusses building performance simulation (BPS) programs and how they are used. It provides background on the development of BPS programs from the 1960s to present day, noting their evolution from evaluating fallout shelters to helping architects design more energy efficient buildings. BPS programs model the complex energy flows within and surrounding a building. They allow architects to analyze different energy conservation measures and their interactions, helping optimize building performance and costs. The document recommends EnergyPlus as a BPS program and discusses using graphical user interfaces to input building data and run simulations to evaluate energy performance over time.

Residential Case Studies of Passive Strategiesaiahouston
This document summarizes a presentation about passive design strategies for homes in hot humid climates like Texas. It provides examples of over a dozen case studies of homes designed by the presenter to utilize passive strategies like shading, ventilation, thermal mass, and daylighting to reduce energy usage and increase comfort. Owners of these passive homes reported rarely needing to use mechanical cooling or heating except when entertaining guests. The presentation aimed to teach architects the importance of passive design and demonstrate that approaches beyond conventional wood frame construction can create sustainable, resilient homes.
Basic Planning Principles Of Assyrian, Egyptian, Roman and Greek CitiesRajat Katarne
The document discusses cities and settlements during three ancient periods - Assyrian, Egyptian, and Roman. For the Assyrian period, it describes the emergence of powerful Assyrian cities like Nineveh and the different categories of cities. It also discusses patterns in urban planning like the shift northward and new forms like citadels. Khorsabad is presented as a case study. For the Egyptian period, it provides details about the layout and organization of the city of Amarna constructed during that time. And for the Roman period, it outlines characteristics of Roman towns and uses examples like Timgad to explain typical features like street grids and city gates.
This document discusses the visual properties of form, including shape, size, color, texture, position, and orientation. It describes how these properties are affected by viewing conditions like perspective, distance, and lighting. Primary shapes like circles, triangles, and squares are examined for their symbolic meanings and stability. The transformation of forms is also summarized, looking at dimensional changes, subtraction, and addition of volumes. Different types of additive forms are defined, such as centralized, linear, radial, clustered, and grid organizations.
The document discusses the Passive House energy design standard, which aims to achieve a 90% reduction in space heating needs and 70% reduction in total building energy usage. It provides examples of Passive House buildings constructed in Europe and discusses the key design principles, which include superinsulation, airtight construction, and heat recovery ventilation. Compact building designs that minimize surface area are emphasized to reduce energy demands. The Passive House Planning Package (PHPP) is used to calculate and optimize building designs to meet the rigorous Passive House criteria.
Passive Cooling and Vernacularism in Mughal Buildings in North India: A Sourc...drboon
In the present time, scrupulous use of energy is a challenge for the world population. The natural resources of energy are depleting day by day and the present resources seem inadequate to fulfill the need of human beings in future. Global warming and depletion of fossil fuels pose the dual crisis for sustainability. The building sector, being a major consumer of energy necessitates a critical scrutiny on this aspect. The techniques used for cooling, heating and ventilation of the buildings in the past were more harmonious with the nature. Use of locally available resources for design of historical buildings was energy efficient. The passive cooling in historical buildings provides a source of inspiration for sustainable development in contemporary world. In this paper, the author has examined various passive cooling techniques and locally available resources used in Mughal buildings in North India. The design elements of these buildings have evaluated on the basis of their suitability to the climate. The findings of this study suggest further research to explore guidelines for designing energy efficient buildings for sustainable development in the present era and future world.

Rethinking Kållered │ From Big Box to a Reuse Hub: A Transformation Journey ...SirmaDuztepeliler
"Rethinking Kållered │ From Big Box to a Reuse Hub: A Transformation Journey Toward Sustainability"
The booklet of my master’s thesis at the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology. (Gothenburg, Sweden)
This thesis explores the transformation of the vacated (2023) IKEA store in Kållered, Sweden, into a "Reuse Hub" addressing various user types. The project aims to create a model for circular and sustainable economic practices that promote resource efficiency, waste reduction, and a shift in societal overconsumption patterns.
Reuse, though crucial in the circular economy, is one of the least studied areas. Most materials with reuse potential, especially in the construction sector, are recycled (downcycled), causing a greater loss of resources and energy. My project addresses barriers to reuse, such as difficult access to materials, storage, and logistics issues.
Aims:
• Enhancing Access to Reclaimed Materials: Creating a hub for reclaimed construction materials for both institutional and individual needs.
• Promoting Circular Economy: Showcasing the potential and variety of reusable materials and how they can drive a circular economy.
• Fostering Community Engagement: Developing spaces for social interaction around reuse-focused stores and workshops.
• Raising Awareness: Transforming a former consumerist symbol into a center for circular practices.
Highlights:
• The project emphasizes cross-sector collaboration with producers and wholesalers to repurpose surplus materials before they enter the recycling phase.
• This project can serve as a prototype for reusing many idle commercial buildings in different scales and sizes.
• The findings indicate that transforming large vacant properties can support sustainable practices and present an economically attractive business model with high social returns at the same time.
• It highlights the potential of how sustainable practices in the construction sector can drive societal change.
