1. Horton Hears a Who: Philosophy and Authority

For four days, Thursday, Friday, Monday, and Tuesday; my philosophy class has been watching the
children’s movie, Horton Hears a Who. It deals with a male elephant named Horton who discovers on a
pink flower with a green and yellow stem, a speck. Now in this speck,there is a town called Whoville. Its
residents consist of Whos, sentient beings with fur. A kangaroo mother by the name of the Sour
Kangaroo, however does not believe that Whoville and Whos exist because she cannot perceive them
with her senses; her sight, smell, ears. She believes that Horton will corrupt the animal children of the
jungle of Nul so she tries to stop Horton; she tries to take that flower from him. Also, Horton becomes
friends with the mayor of Whoville, Ned McNodd. McNodd tries to convince the residents that Whoville
is in danger but the residents have trouble believing in him.
Even if this movie is for kids, it deals with two adult subjects, philosophy, and authority. Philosophy is
the love and pursuit of wisdom. In philosophy, one asks many important questions, one thinks critically.
In the movie, there are two important questions. To the animals of Nool, are there little people on the
speck? To the Whos, is there a bigger world outside of Whoville?
According to philosophy, at first, you are ignorant about certain subjects. For example, why is it KT of
the word “KT boundary and not CT? Which theory establishes that all theory must be non-local? What is
the NDAA lawsuit?
Then you gain knowledge of the subjects you did not know at first. For example, KT of the word “KT
boundary is what it is because C had already been appropriated for Cambrian. Bell’s theorem establishes
that all reality must be non-local. The NDAA lawsuit is mostly unknown and ignored lawsuit which
consists of the journalist Chris Hedges and others suing Barack Obama over the NDAA (The national
defense authorization act) which allows citizens to be detained without trial; it is a treat to the civil
liberties of Americans.
In the movie, the jungle animals, especially the Sour Kangaroo, did not believe in Whoville, and the
Whos, especially the Councilman, didn’t believe that their town was small, and that there was a bigger
world outside of their world. The enlightened beings, Horton and McNodd, believed in all this. They tried
to convince the ignorant to believe. Of course, they were met with hostility. But eventually, they come
around. When they receive proof, they believe. The Whos believe in Horton and the bigger world when
they heard Horton’s voice. The animals of the jungle of Nool believed in Whoville after McNodd’s only
son, Jojo, extremely loud, using a horn which leads the Sour Kangaroo’s son Rudy to capture the flower
containing Whoville before it falls into boiling oil thus saving the Whos from destruction.
In philosophy, at first you are ignorant. Then, you learn. When you learn, you have become enlightened.
You know many subjects. You will try to teach what you learn to others.
Now people can be skeptical to what they learn; they won’t believe, they will refuse to believe. They
don’t believe what they have been taught; they may consider it dangerous. So they will tell you that you
are wrong; they will use facts to back up their belief. Skepticism can good or bad. It’s good to question.
Questioning can leads to good change. Unfortunately, it can also bad. By bad, it leads people to not accept

2. the truth. When you accept the truth, you become enlightened. You go from being in a state of ignorance
to a state of knowledge.
My dictionary defines authority as the power or right to command: officials with this power. In Horton
Hears a Who, there are authority figures who are good and bad. The good figures consist of Horton and
McNodd. Horton is a teacher of animal children. Moving forward, McNodd is the mayor of Whoville; he
has had previous relatives who were the mayors. But he is also the father of 96 daughters and a son
named Jojo. These authority figures are wacky, funny, they believe in what others do not, they are
mocked for their beliefs; they try to teach others what is truly real.
Now, the main bad authority figures are the Sour Kangaroo and a member of a council consisting of green
Whos; he is known as the Councilman. A minor bad authority is the leader of apes. But he really isn’t
important so he not will be described in detail. The Sour Kangaroo is a mother of her son Rudy; she
pouch schools him which is like home schooling. And she’s a leader or she’s like a leader to the animals
of Nool. Next, the council seems to have more power than the mayor. A member of the council, the
Councilman speaks with the mayor. For example, when the mayor decides to stop the Whoville festival
due to some bad event possibly occurring in Whoville, a glass container is brought down to contain the
mayor and the council. The Councilman, the one who speaks, chases,chokes,and insults the mayor. The
container is there so that the audience won’t hear all this happening. These authority figures are skeptical
about what the good authority figures say and do, they’re realists, and they try to stop the good authority
figures. Horton Hears A Who deals with philosophy because of certain ideas and questions, and it deals
with authority because of certain characters.
Also, Horton Deals with authority. In the movie, the Sour Kangaroo addresses to a crowd of animals that
Horton is corrupting the children of Nool with the flower containing the speck. She also states that if you
question too much, you question authority, and that leads to anarchy. The Sour Kangaroo is using fear in
order to make the crowd get Horton and the flower.
Horton Hears a Who is a children’s movie; it contains humour. Yet, it deals with the topics of philosophy
and authority. Since it deals with these topics, it is a smart deep movie that can lead people to think
critically.
