2. In horror films, technology has been used to create more fear in
audiences, either by illustrating the risks of technology or by using
technologies to create further realism in horrors.
Examples of this include: Use of televisions and VHS tapes to kill
people in ‘The Ring’, phones in ‘Scream’ and ‘Eden Lake’, where
they are used to threaten and track down victims.
In these examples, technology is used against the victims, perhaps
acting as metaphors for the risks of technology. For instance, the
use of VHS tapes in ‘The Ring’ could be a response to the easy
availability of ‘video nasties’ which had caused controversy in the
previous decade, while the use of mobile phones in ‘Eden Lake’
could be illustrative of technology in the wrong hands.
3.
The horror industry has made use of
various trends of technology over the
years, with early 50’s films such as
‘House of Wax’ selling themselves on
the prospect of being able to see an
“amazing feature picture in natural
vision”. This trend has been revived
recently, with the proliferation of
RealD digital 3D, with the release of
films such as ‘Saw: The Final Chapter’.
Moreover, CGI has been used
prominently in horror films, as horror
became more science-fiction oriented
in the 1990’s. Examples of this include
films such as ‘Deep Rising’.
