Atticus Finch is a lawyer and single father in Maycomb, Alabama in the 1930s. He teaches his children and community to stand up for their beliefs in the face of prejudice by defending Tom Robinson, a black man falsely accused of raping a white woman. Atticus is a voice of reason and morality, dispelling prejudice through his wise and logical approach. Though sometimes seen as too idealistic, Atticus treats all people with empathy, understanding, and respect.
