New Year's is one of the oldest holidays, originating in 2000 BC in ancient Babylon where it was celebrated for 11 days to mark the new moon after the spring equinox. The Romans continued the tradition, celebrating in March, but later standardized the calendar to begin the new year on January 1st. Over time, Christianity incorporated New Year's celebrations, and the tradition of counting down and celebrating with fireworks and kissing at midnight on December 31st spread globally.

3. How it started! New years has been known to be the oldest of all holidays. In ancient Babylon around 2000 BC it began with the new moon after the 1st day of spring. The Babylonians would celebrate new years for 11 days. The Romans kept this tradition going but celebrated it in the month of March. However, their calendar was messed with by the emperors and soon wasn't synchronized with the sun. To put the calendar in order the Roman senate declared January 1st to be the beginning of the new year. The early Catholic church had condemned these traditions as paganism but as Christianity became widespread the church soon became part of these celebrations. The western nations were the only ones who had celebrated this holiday for the next 400 years
