Title
This December we will have to say goodbye to the beloved Camille Hawthorne.
In her 25 years here, much has changed. From the obvious of the students and
faculty to the not so obvious of the facilities, such as McKelvey and Berlin Village, which
Hawthorne was a crucial part in the development of. However, Hawthorne will be
remembered for much, much more than that.
“Camille has made this campus into the best small college that you can find,”
said junior Andria Alessio, “and she has really reached that goal of making this school a
community and showing that the faculty really does care about the students here.”
Hawthorne’s job here on campus is no simple task, it involves practically every
student activity Westminster has to offer: SGA advisor, makes the student handbooks,
coordinates Fresh Start, CPC advisor, Club Room advisor, PanHellenic advisor, greek
week committee advisor, manages McKelvey, SLAC advisor, prepares the student
activity calendar. The list goes on and on, and each activity has other various functions
to them that require time. Hawthorne has gone above and beyond what is expected
from a student activities coordinator.
“I guess my responsibilities have grown since I’ve been here. I try to stay in the
background and then just jump in when I’m needed. I have my job description saying
what I’m supposed to do and then it also says ‘other duties as assigned’. So there are a
lot of things I do that aren’t in my job description, but I just like to do it” said Hawthorne.
Northwestern Louisiana graduate is planning on returning to the south after she
leaves us here at Westminster. Hawthorne is moving to Texas to live with her sister and
her parents. She has a jump in her step and a smile on her face when she speaks of the
great trips she wants to take her family, especially her nephew, on.
“I always told them that we kept them young be being active” said Hawthorne.
Hawthorne has done so much for this campus. Yet, when asked what final words
she would like to leave this campus with, a glisten came to her eyes and her reply was
this: “This campus is amazing, I’ve never seen a campus that dedicates so much to
service. We couldn’t do anything without these students and I forget sometimes to tell
them thank you. I will leave and all I really want to say is thank you.”
Hawthorne has not only been of a great service to our campus and our
community, but has also been a true mentor to many. Teaching the students here one
of the best lessons of all: hard work and determination and you will achieve.
“Camille is a true mentor for me. Since I have been working for her it has been a
whirlwind! I have changed my major,” says Alessio, “I want to do what Camille does:
she has always been there for advice and has always supported me. I would love to be
just like her one day and make a difference in someone’s life like she has in mine.”
After 25 years of impeccable service to this school, and especially to its students,
Camille Hawthorne is leaving us. Although her final words were a thank you to us, we
want to thank you in return Camille. Everything might not have gotten done without the
leaders in the student body but at the same time the student body could not do it without
you. So thank you Camille, you will be greatly missed.
