Structure and functioning of sex work and level of risk Sex Workers (SWs) take varies by typology which has a bearing on HIV prevalence among them. This is seldom taken into account while designing interventions with allocation of funds being linked more to number of SWs to be reached rather than needs . HIV Prevalence Among Heterogeneous Female and Male Sex workers in Mumbai: The Aastha Experience Amita Dhanu 1 , Vishwanath Koliwad 2 1 Aastha Project, Family Planning Association of India (FPAI), India 2 Secretary General, Family Planning Association of India (FPAI), India ISSUE PROJECT FPAI with 7 partner agencies, is implementing the Aastha Project in Mumbai for male, female SWs operating from bars, brothels, streets and homes. Service package includes peer led education, clinical services for STIs, HIV testing, distributing condoms, facilitating community mobilization. RESULTS Retrospective data was analyzed of 13,801 SWs who accessed HIV testing facilities during March’09-February’11 which shows HIV prevalence at 6 ％ . Brothel-based female SWs (FSWs), showed highest prevalence (12%); street-based (5 ％ ); bar-girls (4 ％ ); home-based (2 ％ ); male SWs (MSWs) lowest at (1.8 ％ ).Variations in age, transaction frequency, place of sex work, condom use and violence emerged as factors that have bearing on SWs’ vulnerability to HIV. LESSON LEARNED Project found dissimilarities in health needs among FSWs and between FSWs and MSWs. Based on their characteristics, SWs can be segmented and need based service packages can be developed. This understanding should help programmers and donors in designing and allocating funds for HIV intervention projects.
