Mission San Luis was home to 1,500 Apalachee Indians, who were descendants of those encountered by Hernando de Soto. It is still historically significant as the only reconstructed Spanish mission in Florida. Castillo San Cristóbal in San Juan, Puerto Rico was one of the largest fortresses built in the Americas for protecting the city from land attacks. Built in 1634, it saw several battles and was also later used as a U.S. Army base. Both sites provide important historical perspectives on Spanish colonialism in North America.
