Eventing originated in France in the 1800s as a military training event called "Raid Militaire" to showcase the balance between horse and rider. It has since evolved into a competitive equestrian sport with 3 phases - dressage, cross country jumping, and stadium jumping. Eventing was added to the Olympics in 1912 and it remains the only equestrian sport where men and women compete against each other.
