This document provides a history of basketball in New Jersey. It discusses the origin of basketball being invented in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1896. It outlines some of the earliest competitive basketball games in NJ, the development of college and high school basketball programs in the state, as well as notable professional basketball teams and players that originated from or played in NJ, such as the NBA's New Jersey Nets that were located in the state from 1977 to 2012 and 2011 to 2013. It also recognizes some of the most famous basketball players born in NJ including Shaquille O'Neal and Rick Barry.
