Around the world with namju cho
Namju Cho grew up traveling around the world with her father's work for the Korean government. She lived in Australia, the Netherlands, Ivory Coast, France, Korea, Chile, Bolivia, Argentina, Venezuela, and the United States. Namju became fluent in French, English, and Spanish. She studied journalism in Korea and the U.S. and worked as a journalist covering Korea's transition to democracy. Namju earned a master's degree from Harvard and has worked for non-profits in Los Angeles. She is now a project manager at SGA.
Fisherman Appreciation Day 2011
The 2nd Annual Fisherman Appreciation Day event was held on June 25, 2011 at the Santa Monica Pier. Over 250 community members learned about fish contamination issues in the Palos Verdes Shelf and received informational materials in multiple languages. Participants also completed fish consumption surveys. Generous partners donated over $5,000 in prizes. The free event featured games, presentations and food and helped educate the public about locally caught seafood safety.

First users: Heuristics for designer/developer collaboration

Ask a web designer who his “first users” are, and he’ll probably name early adopters, stakeholders, or usability testers. Designers rarely consider their actual first users: the web developers they work with to build their designs. Over the last year, I’ve performed an informal user research project where the “users” were software development teams of all shapes and sizes. Drawing on these discussions and my background as a former web developer, I’ve created a set of friendly heuristics (in the tradition of Jakob Nielsen and Louis Rosenfeld) that designers can use to make their design materials far more useful for developers. I’ll show how these heuristics will encourage holistic solutions rather than piecemeal design work, surface critical implementation issues sooner, and establish a stronger basis for designer/developer collaboration.
