Dirk Hartog was a Dutch explorer born in 1580 who was appointed to trade with Batavia in 1616. In 1616, while sailing on the ship The Dolphin, Hartog became the first known European to land on the western coast of Australia, where he left a pewter plate inscribed with a message claiming the land for the Dutch. In 1697, William de Vlamingh found Hartog's plate and left his own plate, taking the original back to Amsterdam. Hartog died in an unknown location in 1621 after spending time exploring Australia and its coastline.
