In 1890, Alexandre F. Godefroy invented the hot air hairdryer, but the first commercial hairdryer in 1925 only produced 100 watts of heat, not quickly drying hair. Between 1925-1945, hairdryers were optimized to 300 watts while made of steel and zinc, heavy materials. By 1960 improvements increased heat to 500 watts, and in 1970 safety was improved as the CPSC recommended guidelines. Now, portable hairdryers can reach 2000 watts of heat using lightweight plastic technology and insulating materials developed since 1990.
