The wetplate collodion process for producing photographs in the 19th century was very involved, requiring photographers to clean and coat glass plates with light-sensitive collodion on-site, immerse them in a silver nitrate solution, rapidly develop exposed plates, fix them with potassium cyanide, and varnish the finished plate, all within minutes. This meant photographers had to carry all the chemicals needed with them into the field.
