Many years ago, I used to produce interactive applications of historical maps of Malaysia from 2013 to 2017. This was document in my blog - daneshatlas.blogspot.com.au. Learn more on how do you approach in visualizing historical topics using maps

▪ My brief biodata
▪ Two ways to visualize historical maps or data
▪ Key Considerations
▪ Final Remarks
3. Mybriefbio
▪ Am trained as a GIS Specialist (studied Geomatics in
Australia)
▪ Love maps since the age of 10
▪ While I was in Australia, I have already set my eyes to
produce maps of Malaysia
▪ From 2013 to 2017, been producing history focused
maps of Malaysia
▪ Currently, working in Sunway University
▪ On the side, my focus is on electoral activism

VisualizeHistory
usingMaps
▪ Two approaches to be considered (from my
experience)
▪ Georeference historical maps and put them on a website
(for past and present comparison)
▪ Time based visualization
▪ Let’s start with first approach
▪ Historical Maps in Malaysia – hard to get
▪ Some examples I did: Historical Maps of Penang and
Historical Maps of Selected Cities in Malaya
5. Waysto
VisualizeHistory
usingMaps
▪ Example 1: Malayan Towns: A look to the past

independence.html?fbclid=IwAR2jphFt39azI58K-

▪ Example 2: Penang and George Town Over The Years
http://daneshatlas.blogspot.com/2017/12/penang-
over-time.html
▪ Both Applications powered by ArcGIS Online
6. Waysto
VisualizeHistory
usingMaps
▪ Second Approach:Time Based Visualization
▪ More time is spent to collect the data than actual
visualization work
▪ Example 1: Malaysian Railway History (1885 - Today)
http://daneshatlas.blogspot.com/2015/08/interactive-
time-based-animation-map.html
▪ Example 2: Malaysian Dams
http://daneshatlas.blogspot.com/2015/07/my-foray-
into-cartodb.html
▪ Opted for ArcGIS Online and Carto
7. Key
Considerations
▪ Sourcing the Map: National Library of Australia, Perry-
Castañeda Library (University of Texas, Austin)
▪ Georeferencing: Does the map have enough
discernible points for coordinates to be added?
▪ Platform of Choice: ArcGIS Online, Carto (and other
platforms you think of)
▪ Data Collection:Where to get point or polygon-based
data?
▪ Data/ Symbology Classification: How do you group the
data?
8. FinalRemarks
▪ Identify what you would like to study (railway,
comparison of past and present for town, evolving land
use)
▪ Knowing where to find the information needed (try
avoiding using the path of approaching government
institutions first unless you have working relationship
before hand)
▪ Identify which data format suits the project (Raster
maps or vector-based points)
▪ Identify platform to host the maps or data
