Modular design involves subdividing a system into smaller, discrete modules that can be independently created and used in different systems. This approach offers benefits like reduced costs, flexibility in design, and the ability to augment systems by adding new modules. Modular design is seen in many areas like vehicles, where parts like engines can be added or removed without altering the rest of the car. It is also used in computer hardware, where components like processors, graphics cards, and storage drives can be easily upgraded or replaced using standardized interfaces. The modular approach allows for customization while maintaining the advantages of standardization in manufacturing.
This document discusses various types of wall systems used for interior construction. It describes non-load bearing wall types like masonry, reinforced concrete, stud walls, and glass partitions. Requirements for walls include space division, integration of mechanical systems, fire resistance, acoustic and insulation properties. Selection criteria include wall thickness, weight, flexibility and integration of openings. The document focuses on stud wall systems, including metal and timber framing options. It outlines wall cladding materials like gypsum boards and provides technical details on sound insulation and wall junctions. Raised access flooring systems are also summarized.
This document provides an overview of a 469MW combined cycle power plant located in Samalkot, India. It describes the plant's capacity and inputs/outputs. The plant uses a combination of gas and steam cycles with two gas turbines and one steam turbine. It also includes details on the electrical equipment such as generators, transformers, circuit breakers and isolators. Protection schemes, ratings, and alternative systems such as diesel generators and UPS systems are covered as well.
The document discusses elevators and their control systems. Elevators use either hydraulic or cable systems to move between floors of buildings. Hydraulic elevators use a hydraulic ram and piston to lift an elevator car, while cable systems use steel ropes connected to a sheave and counterweight. Elevator control systems are real-time, distributed, and embedded to safely move passengers based on button inputs and current floor. Safety systems like brakes and shock absorbers prevent elevator accidents in case of cable or power failures.
Designing low costs sensor system for the Internet of ThingsAndreas Schaller
The document discusses designing low-cost sensor systems for the Internet of Things (IOT). It covers various IOT application areas like future internet, energy efficient buildings, and factories of the future. Short range wireless technologies like Bluetooth, WiFi, GPS, and RFID are discussed for system integration. Example use cases presented include ambient assisted living and a "Mildew Watch Dog" sensor label for detecting moisture. The presentation aims to provide an overview on leveraging technologies like flexible substrates, printed electronics, and energy harvesting to create low-cost sensor solutions for the IOT.
This document discusses factors to consider when designing lifts, including population, handling capacity, and quality of service. It provides guidelines for calculating population based on building occupancy type and floor area. Handling capacity is calculated using a formula considering average passengers carried per trip, waiting interval, and total peak population. Quality of service is measured by passenger waiting time, with intervals classified as excellent, good, or fair. Round trip time is also calculated, considering time for passenger entry/exit, door operation, acceleration/deceleration, and travel speeds. Recommended lift speeds are provided for different building types.
This document provides information on lifts, escalators, and the differences between the two. It defines a lift as a type of vertical transport equipment that moves people or goods between floors of a building. Basic lift components and terminology are explained. The main types of lifts are described as passenger, goods, vehicle, dumbwaiter, and scissor lifts. Escalators are defined as moving staircases that transport people between floors. Escalator components and operating mechanisms are outlined. Applications of lifts and escalators in buildings are listed. The key differences between lifts and escalators are vertical versus horizontal movement, enclosed spaces versus open steps, and relative speeds.
An escalator consists of a motor-driven chain of individual, linked steps that move up or down on tracks, allowing the steps to remain horizontal. Escalators are used to efficiently move large numbers of people between floors in places where elevators would be impractical, such as in department stores and airports. The main components of an escalator include the landing platforms that house the drive gears and motors, a truss that bridges the platforms, and tracks that guide the endless chain of steps in their continuous loop. Escalators are designed to have a step width of 600mm, 800mm, or 1000mm and a standard transportation speed between 0.5 to 0.65m/s.
The document discusses lifts and escalators, including their history, components, types, and maintenance requirements. It notes that lifts have been used since the 3rd century BC and the first passenger elevator was built in 1743. Modern lifts are controlled automatically using computers and microchips. Escalators were introduced in 1900 and are used to transport large numbers of people vertically between floors. Proper maintenance of lifts and compliance with acts like the Bombay Lift Acts are important for safety.
PLC based home automation (undergrad thesis)Sameer Patel
This project aims at automating many home appliances. The appliances are
controlled automatically and the functioning of the appliances is controlled by
the programmable Logic Controller (PLC). As the functioning of the appliances
is integrated with the working of PLC, the project proves to be accurate,
reliable and more efficient than the existing controllers.
The processes that are proposed to be automated in this project are:-
1. Interior and Exterior Lights
2. Burglar Alarm
3. Fire Alarm
4. AC On/Off, Lights On/Off and Fans On/Off Using DTMF
Also, the functioning of many of these devices will be interconnected depending
upon the events that occur. The monitoring of the complete process will be done
through SCADA.

This document summarizes various techniques for saving energy in wireless sensor networks. It discusses how sensor nodes consume power through transmission, reception, processing and idle listening. It then describes approaches like sleep-wake scheduling, MAC protocols like S-MAC and T-MAC, in-network processing, network coding and scheduled/contention-based communication protocols to minimize energy usage. The goal is to reduce unnecessary listening and maximize the time sensors spend in sleep mode to improve battery life for sensor network applications.
The document discusses wireless sensor networks and describes their key characteristics. It notes that wireless sensor networks consist of low-power smart sensor nodes distributed over a large field to enable wireless sensing and data networking. The sensor nodes contain sensors, processors, memory, and radios. Wireless sensor networks can be either unstructured with dense node distribution or structured with few scattered nodes.
This document discusses wireless sensor networks. It outlines their applications such as environmental monitoring, health care, and military uses. It also examines factors that influence sensor network design like fault tolerance, scalability, production costs, and power consumption. The communication architecture of sensor networks is presented, including the application, transport, network, data link, and physical layers. Sensor networks have the potential to be widely used in many applications due to their flexibility and fault tolerance.
