This poem describes the moment when the speaker wakes up to find his infant son smiling back at him. The son's smile possesses and awakens the speaker, prompting him to smile back with a smile of his own or one rediscovered. The speaker's son lights the true path ahead of him by cutting in front and running, just as the true gift of the son's smile continues giving by being returned and redelivered between them, pouring through them like a river. Upon this waking experience amongst men, the speaker kisses his son's mouth and pledges himself to the boy forever.
