Herod was a Roman client king who ruled Judea and expanded his rule with the support of Rome. He is famous for his extensive building projects, including expanding and refurbishing the Second Temple in Jerusalem. However, many Jews opposed Herod and considered him a foreign ruler who corrupted Jewish traditions. While the Temple was seen as architecturally beautiful, Jews were unhappy that Herod placed a pagan symbol on it and executed rabbis, viewing him as destroying Jewish institutions. After his death, his heir faced rebellion from Jews still angry at Herod's rule.
