W.R. Leigh’s Home, Sweet Home (1932) sets record with $1.195 million price in Art of the American West at Heritage Auctions
Tom Lovell, Maynard Dixon, Birgér Sandzen all show ever-strengthening Western Art category, Nov. 5 in Dallas
DALLAS, TX – W.R. Leigh’s Home, Sweet Home soared to nearly double its pre-auction estimate selling for $1.195 million and setting a new world record price for the artist in Heritage Auctions’ impressive $2.27 million Art of the American West Signature® Auction, Saturday, Nov. 5. The painting came to auction from The Property of Philip Jonsson, son of former Dallas Mayor and Texas Instruments Co-Founder Eric Jonsson.
Overall, the auction saw 262 bidders vying for just 74 total lots, translating into a 95% sell-through by value. All prices include 19.5% Buyer’s Premium.
“We knew this was an exceptional and historically important painting from the start,” said Kirsty Buchanan, Consignment Director for Western Art at Heritage. “Collectors obviously thought so, too, pushing it to a new record price for one of Leigh’s works. It led what proved to be a strong auction; we’re all thrilled with the response.”
“It’s just a masterfully depicted tableau,” said Ed Beardsley, Vice President of Heritage Auctions. “It’s saturated with the colors and tones of the western landscape and it tells a compelling story of camaraderie on the plains.”
Another W.R. Leigh masterwork, Renegade at Bat, 1941 – also from The Property of Philip Jonsson – was the subject of much collector buzz and bidding in the auction before finishing the day at $388,375, further burnishing the great artist’s reputation. Renegade at Bay is a superbly executed scene of a horse whose calm demeanor is an effective contrast to the tension displayed by the cowboy who is awaiting imminent danger just around the bend.
Tom Lovell is always a perennial favorite in both Heritage Western Art and Illustration Art auctions, and his The Raven Followers, 1975, true to form, proved to be a favorite with collectors in this auction, as the painting of two American Indian warriors scouting buffalo from a sweeping vista realized $131,450. Maynard Dixon proved to be another artist who collector’s continue to hotly seek, as his oil Calico Hills (Virgin Valley, Nevada; No.350), 1927, more than tripled its $30,000+ pre-auction estimate to soar to $95,600.
The work of Birgér Sandzen continues to sell well at auction, as a pair of his oil paintings enticed collectors. His Early Fall, Smoky Hill River (Kansas), 1940 realized $71,700, while his Cottonwood Trees and Pond, 1922 performed admirably by bringing $47,800 exceeding the high estimate.

Renoir's Le Bouquet, 1910, Brings $657,250 In Heritage Fine Art Auction
Daniel Ridgway Knight’s Young Woman Knitting brings $143,400; Edmund Henry Osthaus and Edward-Léon Cortès both make strong showing in Nov. 8 American & European Art Auction in Dallas
DALLAS, TX – Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s Le Bouquet, 1910, brought $657,250 as the top lot in Heritage Auctions’ American & European Signature® Art Auction, Nov. 8, at Heritage’s Design District Annex, 1518 Slocum Street.
Le Bouquet came to Heritage from the family of renowned Texas artist Lucien Abrams, who acquired it from Renoir’s dealer, Durand-Ruel in New York during September 1933. Durand-Ruel originally obtained the painting from Renoir’s family.
“This wonderful still life has been with the Abrams family for nearly 80 years and has been kept in outstanding condition,” said Ed Beardsley, Managing Director of Heritage Auctions’ Department of Fine Arts. “Collector interest was high and bidding was spirited, proving that Abrams’ heirs made the right decision to bring the painting to market now.”
The auction’s cover lot, Daniel Ridgway Knight’s Young Woman Knitting, hailing from a private collection in San Diego, CA, took the second slot in the auction’s top lots, realizing an impressive $143,400, besting its pre-auction estimate of $80,000+ by more than $60,000.
“Young Woman Knitting is an iconic example of Knight’s work on a large scale, painted with a masterful sense of composition and Impressionist palette,” said Ariana Hartsock, Consignment Director at Heritage. “This work, featuring a young wistful peasant woman in a picturesque French landscape, obviously resonated with bidders, given the number of participants and solid final price realized.”
Martin Johnson Heade has proven consistently popular in Heritage’s American & European Art Auctions, with the Nov. 8 event proving no exception. Heade’s subtle, lovely Red Roses in a Japanese Vase on a Gold Velvet Cloth, circa 1885-1890, drew much advance notice and a $53,775 price realized in the final analysis.
Two sporting paintings by Edmund Henry Osthaus, both from The Houston Club Collection, performed solidly in the auction. English Setter with Grouse realized $41,825, while English Setters in Field came in at $38,838,
A strong selection of canvases from Edward-Léon Cortès proved the enduring popularity of the French street-scene master. His Cafe de la Paix easily surpassed its $25,000+ pre-auction estimate to finish the day at $35,850, while his Madeleine, Front View, also soared past a $20,000+ pre-auction estimate to bring $31,070, a final price realized matched by The Opera, a wonderful scene superbly evocative of a rainy Paris afternoon.
Rounding out the top offerings of the auction were Henry Raeburn’s Portrait of General Henry Wynyard, circa 1811-1819, which proved one of the auction’s most pleasant surprises, realizing $

Lou Gehrig Collection Brings Nearly $1 Million To Fuel Record-Setting $4.95+ Million Heritage Sports Auction
Cy Young’s 1908 Red Sox jersey, “Shoeless Joe” Jackson’s baseball bat and Bobby Jones’ 1937 Green Jacket show spectacular strength in Vintage Sports Collectibles auction, Aug. 4 in Chicago
DALLAS, TX – A grouping of six items, known as The Lou Gehrig Collection, brought to auction by the son of a woman who was left the trove by Gehrig’s mother, Christina, brought almost $1 million altogether as the emotional centerpiece of Heritage Auctions’ Aug. 4 Signature® Vintage Sports Collectibles Platinum Auction.
The lead lot of the group was Gehrig’s previously-unknown 1934 Tour of Japan game worn uniform, which realized $507,875. All prices include 19.5% Buyer’s Premium.
“The chances of a group of material like this, so intimately related to one of the greatest sportsmen to ever live, turning up together all at once,” said Chris Ivy, Director of Sports Auctions at Heritage, “is akin in the sports collecting world to finding a stack of Picasso paintings in the art world.”
Overall, the auction yielded just more than $4.95 million, on just 97 lots sold, translating into an average lot value of more than $51,000 with a general sell-through of 93% as 579 bidders competed for a piece of the unparalleled sporting history that was on the block.
“I believe this was the most spectacular assembly of sporting artifacts presented within a single auction in the 21st century,” said Ivy. “We smashed records and we burnished our reputation with each record result. If there were any questions about our ability to deliver results for the hobby's elite pieces, none could have survived last night.”
Live bidding at the Muvico Theaters in the shadow of Rosemont, IL’s National Sports Collectors Convention was interrupted repeatedly by loud applause as hobby veterans were stunned by results that continually dwarfed pre-auction estimates by significant amounts. The tone of the evening became apparent with the very first lot, as a baseball autographed by the 1926 New York Yankees opened at $30,000 before skyrocketing to the world-record price realized of $131,450, the highest figure ever paid at auction for a team sphere.
It was the first of six lots representing the highlights of the recently unearthed Lou Gehrig Collection, as mentioned above, which continued to draw gasps with each subsequent drop of the auctioneer's gavel. Besides the 1926 ball and legendary first baseman's 1934 Tour of Japan uniform, which commanded a live bidding frenzy on its way to the aforementioned $507,875 price realized, Gehrig's matching cap from the 1934 Japanese tour, sold separately, added another $95,600 to the tally, while the American League Championship wristwatch presented to the Iron Horse for his service to the 1926 Yankees notched a remarkable $155,350. Allosaurus, Stegosaurus, Triceratops, prehistoric Megaladon shark jaws, June 12, 2011 at Heritage Auctions
Largest auction of its kind ever, featuring “The Fighting Pair” Allosaurus and Stegosaurus, a near complete Triceratops, a complete duck-billed Maiasaurus, the largest prehistoric Megaladon shark jaws ever assembled and more…
DALLAS, TX – In an unprecedented event, Heritage Auctions will feature no less than four dinosaur skeletons - “The Fighting Pair” Allosaurus and Stegosaurus, a near complete Triceratops, and a complete duck-billed Maiasaurus – along with dozens of important prehistoric treasures, as part of its June 12, 2011 Natural History Auction, in Dallas, at the Tower Building in Fair Park.
The specimens will be on display, and open to the public for viewing, Thursday to Saturday, June 9-11, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, June 12, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“Every one of these incredible fossils is museum-quality,” said David Herskowitz, Director of Natural History at Heritage Auctions. “It’s rare to find even one truly great dinosaur for an auction, let alone the four we’ve managed to assemble for this summertime auction.”
Far and away the stars of the dino show are an Allosaurus and a Stegosaurus collectively known as “The Fighting Pair,” known as such due to their proximity to one another when they were discovered in the Dana Quarry in Wyoming – the first time these two dinosaurs have ever been found together – during the spring of 2007. The team of excavators at this legendary site thought they were on to the find of a lifetime when they found the Allosuaur, whose name is Dracula. Imagine their surprise when they found a complete Stegosaur – named Fantasia – occupying the same space.
“They were literally right on top of one another,” said Herskowitz, “and they were evidently engaged in mortal combat at the time of their demise, as the leg of the Stegosaurus was found in the mouth of the Allosaurus. The association is undeniable.”
“The Fighting Pair” is being sold as a set due to its scientific importance. They carry a pre-auction estimate of $2.8 million.
Next in line is a virtually complete Triceratops skeleton, checking in at more than 19 feet long, seven feet across and more than 12 feet tall, found in the famous Hell Creek Formation in South Dakota in the spring of 2004. It is estimated at $700,000+, and will be on display at the Dallas Museum of Nature and Science, also at Fair Park in Dallas, through early June.
“The completed skeleton is enormous,” said Herskowitz. “If you can imagine this animal when it was alive bearing down on you with that massive skull and those epic horns, you wouldn’t stand a chance. This creature was the size of a small bus, and certainly a lot meaner.”
A complete duck-billed Maiasaurus, hailing from the Two Medicine Formation in Northern Montana, completes the dinosaur quintet being sold in the auction. The specimen, named Cory, was originally discovered a

Product Design Trends in 2024 | Teenage EngineeringsPixeldarts
The realm of product design is a constantly changing environment where technology and style intersect. In this piece, we delve into the significant trends set to influence the look and functionality of product design in the year 2024.
How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).
