Why Study HDFS
Abroad?
‚Studying abroad in Finland was
an experience I will
never forget! It has allowed me to
discover different parts
of the world that I may
have never seen, and it has opened
my eyes to a world
different from the United States.
I have learned what I am
capable of as an individual,
and I now have a clearer picture of
who I am, who I want
to be, and which direction I want
my life to go in.
I arrived in Finland, single, with no
friends, and I left Finland
with many international friends,
and in love. You never
know what can happen when you
go abroad, so my advice is to
apply now and start
dreaming about the time of your
life!‛
-Jessie Hill
HDFS major, studied abroad in
Oulu, Finland, Spring 2011
Other benefits...
Simply studying abroad in any country
waives a Global marker, and depending on
the program, a Global Non-Western marker.
Speak to an IPC adviser for more infor-
mation.
Will I Graduate on Time?
YES! Students receive UNCG credit for clas-
ses taken abroad, so there is no need to pro-
long graduation.
Can I Afford It?
YES! On semester or year-long exchange
programs, students pay regular UNCG tui-
tion and fees. Housing and meal costs are
typically equivalent to a semester in resi-
dence at UNCG. Any financial aid received
at UNCG can be applied to the program
costs. In addition, students are eligible to
receive travel grants to help offset the costs
of airfare. Set up a meeting with an IPC
adviser to review options and learn more.
HDFS Major Specifics:
When is the best time to study abroad?
HDFS students can study abroad at any time dur-
ing their four years, but the department highly
recommends that you do so before your senior
year. This way, students have more flexibility to
take elective and GEC courses abroad. Begin plan-
ning your study abroad experience early!
What courses can I take abroad?
Many GEC and cognate requirements can be ful-
filled through studying abroad. In addition, stu-
dents can take up to four HDFS courses (12 cred-
its); these must be approved by your advisor. Stu-
dents can take either three or six credits of their
teaching practicum or up to six credits of their
internship, as long as an HDFS advisor has ap-
proved this. Furthermore, any two courses taken
abroad fulfill 6 credits of Global Cognate require-
ments.
Do I need to know a foreign language?
Almost all of our international partner programs
offer extensive coursework in English available to
exchange students. However, the department
highly recommends students consider taking a
foreign language and culture course while abroad.
This is a great way to enhance the study abroad
experience and will benefit students personally
and professionally.
Getting Started!
IPC is dedicated to finding the right pro-
gram for each student, and our huge array
of partner universities allows us to do just
that. Call (336) 334-5404 or stop by 207
