2. Rong or Lepcha- The aborigin of Sikkim
• Dress - The traditional clothing for Lepcha women is the ankle-length Dumvun & clothing
for men is the Thakraw.
• Occupation - The Lepchas are mostly agriculturists. They grow oranges, rice, cardamoms,
and other foods
• Faith - Most Lepchas are Buddhists, adopted Christianity. some Lepchas have not given up
their shamanistic religion, which is known as Mun..
• House - Traditionally, the Lepcha live in a local house called a Li.
• Food - Khuzom is a traditional Lepcha bread. Popular Lepcha dishes are Ponguzom,
Thukpa and Sorongbeetuluk.
• Dances - The popular Lepcha folk dances are Zo-Mal-Lok, Chu-Faat, Tendong Lo Rum
Faat and Kinchum-Chu-Bomsa.
3. Khampa or Bhutia - The immigrants from the Tibetan
Province of Kham.
• Dress - The traditional outfit of Bhutias is the Bakhu (same like the Tibetan chuba
• Occupation - Bhutias are mostly employed in the government sector, in agriculture, and
increasingly in the business arena as well.
• Faith - Vajrayana Buddhism. The main festivals observed by them are Losar .
• House - A traditional Bhutia house is called a "khim" and is usually rectangular.
• Food - Bhutia people traditionally eat rice with animal-fat-fried vegetables or meat, usually
pork or beef, and occasionally mutton or chicken.
• Dances - The popular Bhutia folk dances are Denzong-Neh-Na, Ta-Shi-Yang-Ku,
4. Limbu - Migrated to Sikkim from Tibetan province of Tsang.
• Dress - The traditional dress of the Limbus are Mekhli and Taga.
• Occupation - The Limbu practice subsistence farming traditionally. In the olden days, the
Limbu were skilled in silk farming.
• Faith - The Limbu follow the social rules and regulation of Mundhum oral 'scripture' and a
religious book.
• House - The house of the Limbu is a symbolic representation of a feminine character,
Yuma — a goddess of the Limbu community.

• Dances – Origin of life dance (Ke Lang or Chyabrung dance). War Dance (Nahangma).
• Agricultural dance (Yea Kakma & Damke Akme).
5. The Nepalese : Nepalese community includes three sub
tribes - Kiratis, Newaris and Gorkhas.
• The term Nepalese is a very broad and generic term, which encompasses
within itself, a number of hill tribes as well as Hindu castes. The Nepalese
community in Sikkim is inclusive of three sub-cultural ,sectors: the Kiratis, the
Newaris and the Gorkhas. The Kiratis include Limbu, Rais, Magars, Gurungs,
Tamangs and host of other marginal tribal stocks. Among these Limbus and
Magars are supposed to be the autochthonous inhabitants of Sikkim.
