A BRIEF BIOGRAPHY
Hari went to Stanes High School, one of the best schools at Coimbatore for his Std. 1 to 10th. In 11th, he went to
Sarvajana School where he met his closest friends Parthiban and Arun. That friendship is the talk among all those who
havebeenassociatedwithHari.
Afterhis12thgrade,hefailedtocleartheentranceexaminationforengineeringandwasforcedtopursueB.Sc.At
Government Victoria College, Palakkad. That was the time he laid his hands on the book “Think and Grow Rich” by
Napoleon Hill. Some of the points mentioned in the book influenced him very much. One of the points which he often
quoted was “ If you want to achieve a goal, then never think of a scenario where you don't get that. Burn all the bridges
thatcanmakewaytotheoppositedirectionthatyouwant”.So,evenwhiledoingB.Sc,hethrewawayallhisbookswiththe
full faith that next year, he would not be doing B.Sc, rather, he would be pursuing Engineering. He did not attempt B.Sc

College life was less of studies and more of friends, being part of the political group SFI. During one of the years,
duringcollegeelections,hewasstandingonbehalfofSFIforthepostofArtsClubSecretary.Duringthecampaignthatyear,
Hari just stood on the dias and just smiled and said nothing for almost 10 minutes. That year, when the whole SFI

In 1992, after his engineering, his uncles, who were well settled in
Dubai, offered him lucrative jobs but Hari was not interested in them. He
was more interested in working with real engineering company, even
though small, Kartha Machines with Mr. Venugopal. The real engineer in
Hari emerged during those formative years. He was a hands on man from
dayone.
1994, Hari went in for an interview with George and Martin
Kusters and he was selected. He was working for Kusters India agents till
Kusters Netherlands opened a branch office at Mumbai in 2001. His wife
Sunita,whomhemarriedin1998alsojoinedhimintheBranchoffice.

Hari Sankar Was born on 3rd August 1969, at Palakkad, in Kerala. His father, M. Achuthankutty, is a retired
LIC officer and mother , Late Smt. Meena Achuthankutty, was a aristocratic lady with forward outlook from
Thazchankot family at Mannarghat, Kerala. His only sister Smt. Anitha, was married and settled with husband, Shri.
KarthikeyanMenon,andasonMasterKannan.
Though the family belonged to aristocratic lineage, Hari, as he was popularly known as, had a simple childhood. Father,
an LIC officer, was very honest and dedicated to his job. To this day, the word “LIC” instills a feeling of great pride in him. He is an
exceptionally balanced person, least influenced by grief or happiness. Hari inherited his temperament and dedication to work
from his father. His mother was a loving lady, who believed in giving more than what she gets. Under a watchful upbringing Hari
ingrained a deep sense of duty, love towards all and responsibility. Even as a child his mother would particularly hand him tough
jobs which could be entrusted to responsible adults only. Hari started taking independent decisions and showed tremendous
maturitywhenhewasveryyoungandhisopinionswouldbesoughtbyeldersinthefamily.

Reflections
Words seem hollow
To express the emptiness
Of this life without you..
Any thought brings a tear
In the eye and
An ache In the heart
An ache so deep
That it pierces the soul
The tears come from my deepest being
So helplessly humbled by life
I stand alone and the road ahead
Runs miles as if never ending
Adi and Rhea by my side
Their innocent eyes and trust
Compel me to go on
On this journey of life
- Sunita
I know you are there with me
But on the other side
Watching my every step
What I miss is your physical existence
I know your soul is here
I am connected to you and will always be
On the higher plane
Which knows only joy and peace
I will reflect your being,
Your thoughts
I am, but a shadow of yourself
I will make a winner
Of the soul in me
So that when I meet you
We rejoice in eternity…

WELL BALANCED MAN
W
hen Hari and I married, he expected his wife to be a hands-on engineer. Little did he
know that I had managed to pass Engineering with great marks but little practical
knowledge! He tried his best to make me one. He would force me to do some wiring
or fix lights and tubes at home, much to my dismay. Of course I had no choice but to do as told!
So,ifIcando1%ofpracticaljobs,thecreditgoestohim…
I cherish the time we spent together with his friends Parthiban and Arun and their
families. They were enriching holidays. While everyone wanted to just be and laze around, he
would have an agenda “What to discuss tonight”. The topic could be anything related our
personal or professional growth, religion, or anything else. On one of such holidays, each one
of us was to tell everything negative and positive about the others. While positive is always
welcome,IvaluedthefriendshipmorewhenIsawthatitcouldwithstandthehonestandheavy
criticism also without any ill feelings. Beneath the heavy criticism was the most genuine need
ofeachofustoseetheothergrow.WhereHariis,thereisnoillfeelingormalice…….
Whenever Hari would cook, the whole family relished. It would be one of a kind of a
meal. He would say that he added a special ingredient called “love” which made it so delicious.
Childrenwouldthensimplyforgetmummy’skitchen!!
I could never leave Hari to teach Adi or Rhea for an examination the next day. Teaching
the whole day, he would have finished only one page from the entire text book!! He would tell
them not to worry about the exam, they should only concentrate on understanding the
subject…suchwashisintensity.
He would always urge to spread happiness through our words and not to spread
negativitywiththewrongwords.
Much before Kusters India came into existence;he had a thought about having Kusters
India. Much before the zones came into existence; he had thought about Zones, he had
thought of branch offices and the growth. Much of his life has been converting thoughts into
realities.EarlierIpassedthemoffasfantasiesbutitdidn’ttakemelongtorealizethatwhatever

He would say that he wanted to increase his awareness so much that a man standing on the far

A LETTER TO MY FRIEND
TRUE BLUE
FRIEND..
Death is so uncertain…
like the wind,

flame of a burning candle
any time…
Acquaintances may
come and associates
may go!
But a true blue friend is
hard to find.
Like HARI who was one of
a kind!

Hari,
I wasn’t prepared for you to go
You were so full of life to be
taken away from us so soon
It’s still hard to accept that it is true
I was I and you were you
What we were, the world seldom
knew
What we were to each other
That we still are
You never said that you are leaving
You never said good bye
You were gone before anyone knew it
Only you know why !!
All that we have now and that can’t
be changed are just memories !!
How much we miss your smile
And your advice in the ears
Your absence leaves a hole in me
Which can’t be filled with my tears
You taught me how to be superlative
With vision for every moment to live
To never hold a decision for long
Teaching - live with grace and the
commitment to give
I miss you but I let you go
As a petal you fell too soon
But it was for that voice greater than your
own
You have been my supporter for
seventeen
As your ashes rest I know
You are literally supporting now Kusters team
Whether they are loosing or winning
We sometimes pause and wonder
Add spin to techniques and the skills
We try to finish the work you dreamt
For me you are still here and
the stories are in my head...
-Jose Philip
Gentle smile radiating from the eyes

A friend, guide and mentor he was for all
Innovative thoughts brought solutions to problems

Wisdom never dies nor does deeds
His vision, courage and simplicity spell bound all

BEYOND CUSTOMER’S EXPECTATION!!
The Kilburn staff was ...shocked to see Hari
Hari simply said
SBI is a customer for Kilburn and Kilburn is our customer.
Those were the days when we
launched our coin dispensing
machines in the Indian market. The
first order of 50 machines with compact hoppers
and Lumina note validators was received from
State Bank of India (SBI). All the 50 machines
were installed all over
Gujarat. The installations
of all the machines were
done successfully with the
help of our site technicians
from RBI and technicians
from Kilburn, Ahmedabad.
Our technicians of RBI as
well the technicians of
Kilburn were very new to
the product, hence
a t t e n d i n g t o t h e s e

challenge for them as
many machines were
installed at remote
locations.
T h e c o i n
dispensing machine needs frequent attendance
for cleaning of the note validators and coin
hoppers and sometimes the customer used to
call even for filling coins. After few months, the
technicians of Kilburn started receiving frequent
break down calls for these machines due to the
introduction of new stainless steel coins into the
market by RBI. The technicians were so tired of
attendingtothecallsofthesemachinesthatthey
finally started blaming the quality of our
machines.
The complaints regarding the quality of our
machines, was conveyed by the Kilburn
marketing team to our marketing team who in
turn conveyed the same to Hari. At around 8.30
in the evening when I returned back to office
after completing my field work, Hari came to me
and asked me, “Sudarshan what is your plan for
tomorrow, can we go to Ahmedabad in the
morning?.”Iwasnotevenawareoftheissuesbut
the way he put it; I could realize that there were
some serious issues with our coin dispensing
machines hence I immediately agreed upon and
ourticketswerebookedforAhmedabad.
We reached Ahmedabad in the
morning and we were at Kilburn
office even before they opened
their office. The Kilburn staff’s
was shocked to see Hari and
myself in front of them. They
were not able to tell us anything
about our machines but simply
said we were not aware that
Kusters will take-up this matter
so seriously. Hari simply said SBI
is a customer for Kilburn and
Kilburn is our customer, it is our
duty to attend to our customers
andsortouttheissuespromptly.
Entire team of Kilburn,
Ahmedabad were delighted to
have Hari and me with them for sorting out the
issues reported by SBI. All the technicians were
instructed by their manager to provide us their
full support for solving the problems. We
discussed in detail about the problems of
individual machines and left Kilburn office for
visiting the customers. We went around Gujarat
visiting all the concerned machines and sorting
outtheissues.

A man with
million dreams,
WHO WAS
DREAMING FOR
OTHERS TOO...
- Sankar Balasubramanian
Hari said
today I really a beer and I am hungry too.deserve
There is one incident I still recall and will
not forget during my life time. The problem with
one of the machines was intermittent and Hari was
trying to find out the cause of the same. He started
to work on the machine at 10.30 in the morning
and kept on working till 7.30 in the evening. I was
astonished to see him working on the machine
continuously for almost 9 hours without a single
break. I reminded him twice for lunch at 1:30 PM
and after sometime and for tea at 4:30 PM but he
simply replied, “I am not hungry now.” But at last
we found out the problem and rectified the same
at 7.30 in the evening. He was very happy and said,
“Sudarshan today I really deserve a beer and I am
hungrytoo.Let’sgotohotelandhaveourdinner.”
Hari’s dedication towards his work and his
customers has left a lasting impression on me and I
will always feel privileged to have worked along
with him. I will deeply cherish the memories I have
accumulated and the lessons that I have learned
from him. I will always feel the loss of a good
human being, a good engineer, a good
entrepreneur and above all a dear friend for the
restofmylife.

TRUE AND GENUINE HUMAN
Words are not enough to express personality of Hari sir as he was a bundle of
multiplequalitieswhichmadehimatrueandgenuineman.
He was milestone of this company (KEI). He acted as bedrock to this company, his efforts
are praiseworthy. He gave this company a way to progress and treated this as his second home
and spent much of his time in welfare of this company. He valued his profession more than his
personallifeandalwaysconsideredworkashisworship.
Hari sir influenced every person who came in his contact; he had unprecedented and
influential qualities. There are many things to talk about his personality and professional life but I

It was Sunday I was not well and I decided to go to my native
place,soIcametoofficetobookmyflightticket.Harisirwasalready
there in office and he asked about my health then he told me that
today I am also going to Coimbatore so I will drop you till airport, in
spite there was one and half hours difference between our flights
timing. He left his home early so that I can reach airport safely.
When we were going to airport on the way his car got puncher, then
Hari sir walked a while and arranged one taxi and told me you reach
airport I will manage this. That day I realized that how humble and

He had several qualities which I always appreciated and will appreciate throughout my

FROM EYES TO THOUGHTS
ost of the people are just remembered; we don’t feel them after they’re physically not in
Mthe world. There are only few people whose presence is felt even they are not between us.
Hari was one of them and still you can feel his existence. I have worked with several people
andyoualsomighthaveworkedwithseveralbutthereareveryfewpeoplewhochangeyourstyleofworkingand
directionofyourlife.
Hari was a person who will not force you or ask you to work hard but he will work hard by himself and
will inspire you for doing hard work. There are several incidents which I want to tell you but here I will mention
just one. We were working on a research project together and myself, Hari and Rajeev used to leave late in nights
butwhenwecomebackonthenext day,securityguardusetotellusthatHaricamebackinthenightafterhaving
hisdinnerandwasworkingtillmorning.
When ever you are working in the office and if Hari is around you, the atmosphere will automatically
becomeinspiringandhealthy.
Hari’s decision-making power was ultimate. Any problem cannot be a problem for him for a long time.
All these things made him a very good manager. He use to give full freedom to express your thoughts and
considers your opinion while making decisions. That was the thing, which makes your relationship with Hari as a
friendnotasa CEOor Employee.

MY BEST FRIEND
Neverthought about it that I have to write something about Hari on this kind of situation. I am really

completely. I rememberour first trip to Tirupati, where we both were preparing the very important presentation till

During 2006-2007 we both sat together and shared our views about business. At the end of the discussion
we both decided to start the journey together and fulfill our dream. Our decision was to make the organization as a

we could only achieve through a dedicated force of leaders in the organization who will be the key to achieve the
success. After this day we sat many nights and days and discussed about different challenges and strategy. I think, I
amthepersonwhohadmaximumargumentswithhimduringlast6years.
Let me tell you about the deal we had between us. We both agreed that whatever be the differences of
opinion or arguments we will conclude the meeting with one conclusion, which will be good for the organization.
We will not talk about who win in the debate or whose idea won. We also agreed that we will not have any ego
among ourselves. Till our last meeting we both kept our promises and concluded each discussion with a positive
decision. We were transparent enough to each other. Any point of time we had a difference of opinion on any thing

LEADER
Abrother, a mentor, a leader. These words would, I feel, best describe Hari, whose charisma
has so engulfed us in both our professional and personal life that it now seems difficult to
realize that he has left us. But has he? No. He still stays amidst us his principles guiding us
throughout.
Having worked with Hari for so many years, I wonder how he could keep that smile in tiring
circumstances.Astheysay,whenthegoinggetstough,thetoughgetsgoing.Thattoughnessthoughneverleft
the realm of humility and politeness. He was tough in his goals and yet smiled with humility in that journey.

Hari was focused on his vision, passionate about people and dreamt of creating a wonderful

HARI - A TRUE YOGI

much more to achieve, you had many ideas and dreams to be realised. Then why did you decide now to

You were part of my Family and you were just the next person after my Father to whom I could look up to.
Was it your polite behaviour and sincere concern that found a special place in the hearts of my Wife,

with me all the time, in each and every important decision and in every important event in my Life as

I learnt an important lesson from my Father "not to miss meeting people". I learnt another great lesson
from you ie "to be able to find time not only for friends and business associates but also for new
acquaintances and readily make them your friends". It was this great and rare character of yours which

Knowing you was one of the very best things that happened to me during my school days and ever since
we were always there for each other. The school days are unforgettable when we studied together, went
for tuitions, smoked our first cigarettes on a new year's eve, added shock absorbers to a moped, studied
together for the IIT JEE, raced many motor rallies and lately worked on many projects. And in one rally

HARI's MAGICAL WAND - TRUST
I
n the Middle of June 2009, all of a sudden, I lost my father due to a cardiac arrest. It was too
rude, a shock for me to withstand and because of this sudden development I had to leave
the United States and return back to India. At that time, I was only 28 years old and I had to
look after my whole family.
I was employed in USA in the software field and the entire field was facing a recession in
India too, and therefore I was jobless. Sometime in August 2009, Arun felt that my profile and
attitude might be useful to Kusters and referred me to Hari. I was interviewed by Hari
thoroughly. Within a few days Hari informed me through Arun that they do have a vacancy for
me in Kusters in Mumbai. I inturn informed through Arun that my mother being all alone it
would be much better for me to get employed in Coimbatore itself. Within the next 10 days,
Hari asked me to join in Coimbatore itself in the vacancy created by one person leaving just
then.
Within 2 weeks of my acquaintance Hari insisted that I should not call him as Hari Sir. He said it
is enough if I call him just Hari. It's Hari's Nature that he moves with everyone who works for
Kusters as a friend. He never puts in any air as if, he is a big boss and CEO of this company in
India. This is the secret of his success because he carries everyone along with him as a team.
Because of this team spirit, whatever Hari asks anyone to do, he will do it whole heartedly and
with dedication.
Within 2 months of joining Kusters Coimbatore, Hari was in a position to judge my real
capacity and he understood what I can do and what I cannot do. Based on this trust which he
developed on me whenever I went to him with a new idea, he gave me the full opportunity and
freedom to work with the idea without any interference or interruption. This gave me a sense
of belonging to the company
On some occasions I have noticed that thinking that I am presenting an entirely a new idea, I
will tell about my project to Hari. He will listen to me very patiently as if he is coming to know
that idea for the first time. After my presentation, he may say that when I tried these ideas i
faced such and such problems. I will really be surprised as to why Hari did not cut me short with
my presentation in the beginning itself. That's the difference between an ordinary man and a
Leader.
Then he will tell these are the failures we have noticed but if you
feel confident you can overcome them you can still proceed. Initial
failures have never stopped Hari from pursuing persistently with
the project. He did allow me to proceed in that manner on many
projects of which some of them have succeeded beyond all
expectations.
On some occasions when I was not able to complete my projects
on time and appeared very sad Hari will notice as soon as he enters
my office. He used to come to me and ask me directly why you look
unhappy, then he will encourage me by saying that, in any product
development there is bound to some teething troubles. Then he
will discuss about the possible solutions with me and give me his
ideas and allow me to work independently using those ideas to
solve the problem. These are all the sterling qualities which made
him an Outstanding Leader and CEO.
Today in his absence, I feel it is our bounden duty to translate Hari's
dreams into reality and so it will be difficult for us to even think of
leaving this wonderful company nurtured by an unparalleled leader like Hari.

HARI - THE ENTREPRENEUR CUM CEO
He dreamed, thought, planned, lived for
K U S T E R S
"One does not discover new lands without consenting to lose sight of the shore for a very long time"-
Andre Gide
When I think of Hari, I can only connect his life with the above quote. Even before the Harvard
University published the book on Blue Ocean Strategy, Hari started practicing it for the survival and
growth of Kusters India. When the market for the products like Currency shredding machines reached
the saturation point he was able to conceive of products that never existed. That in essence is the spirit
of Entrepreneurship. At this point of time I would like to quote what Bernard shaw has said about
entrepreneurship
"Some people see things that are and ask Why? Some people dream of things that never were and ask
Why not?" G B Shaw
Even though he was not the owner- he assumed and conducted himself as if he is the Owner of Kusters.
He dreamed, thought, planned, lived for Kusters till his last breath. Very rarely one can come across
such a total identification and dedication of any CEO for the company he works for.
Even before the products he has visualized is developed fully, he always conceived of two more
products to be developed concurrently so that whichever comes out first can sustain the company's
growth. This is how the Cheque Deposit Machine, Coin Vending Machine, Bill Payment terminal,
Information kiosk, etc. were developed and launched.
He was always dreaming about the rapid growth of Kusters even when the rest of the world was
struggling to combat recessionary trends. He was not at anytime frightened about what was
happening in the rest of the world. He was very clear that the products which he launched will have a
growing market presence at least in India. If only the Western world had not been subjected to an
extreme level of depression in the Banking sector, Kusters India would have been exporting the Indian
made machines to the West registering a global presence.
Even the night before his last day of Life he was talking to me about a new product to be made till
11PM and informed me that he will meet with me the next day evening at 4.30pm to do a detailed plan
for launching the product. Unfortunately @ 4.20 PM the merciless claws of destiny gripped him and in
a trice have snatched him from away from all of us.
At this point I'm choked with emotion to continue with my writing and therefore I conclude with an
ancient Sanskrit saying which is most relevant to this agonizing occasion.
"When you were born, you cried while the world rejoiced. Live your life in such a way that when you Die,
the world cries while you rejoice"
Hari, you lived such a life.
Hari could never afford the luxury of a good sleep or good rest when he was alive. Let us all pray that at
least now he has a well deserved eternal rest.
-Arun Arumugam
The above message was the first SMS I received from Hari, on Sep 3, 2010 11:53 PM.

A BRIEF BIOGRAPHY Hariwent to Stanes High School, one of the best schools at Coimbatore for his Std. 1 to 10th. In 11th, he went to Sarvajana School where he met his closest friends Parthiban and Arun. That friendship is the talk among all those who havebeenassociatedwithHari. Afterhis12thgrade,hefailedtocleartheentranceexaminationforengineeringandwasforcedtopursueB.Sc.At Government Victoria College, Palakkad. That was the time he laid his hands on the book “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill. Some of the points mentioned in the book influenced him very much. One of the points which he often quoted was “ If you want to achieve a goal, then never think of a scenario where you don't get that. Burn all the bridges thatcanmakewaytotheoppositedirectionthatyouwant”.So,evenwhiledoingB.Sc,hethrewawayallhisbookswiththe full faith that next year, he would not be doing B.Sc, rather, he would be pursuing Engineering. In 1992, after his engineering, his uncles, who were well settled in Dubai, offered him lucrative jobs but Hari was not interested in them. He was more interested in working with real engineering company, even though small, Kartha Machines with Mr. Venugopal. The real engineer in Hari emerged during those formative years. He was a hands on man from dayone. 1994, Hari went in for an interview with George and Martin Kusters and he was selected. He was working for Kusters India agents till Kusters Netherlands opened a branch office at Mumbai in 2001. His wife Sunita,whomhemarriedin1998alsojoinedhimintheBranchoffice. Father, an LIC officer, was very honest and dedicated to his job. To this day, the word “LIC” instills a feeling of great pride in him. He is an exceptionally balanced person, least influenced by grief or happiness. Hari inherited his temperament and dedication to work from his father. His mother was a loving lady, who believed in giving more than what she gets. Under a watchful upbringing Hari ingrained a deep sense of duty, love towards all and responsibility. 03 WELL BALANCED MAN W henHari and I married, he expected his wife to be a hands-on engineer. Little did he know that I had managed to pass Engineering with great marks but little practical knowledge! He tried his best to make me one. So,ifIcando1%ofpracticaljobs,thecreditgoestohim… I cherish the time we spent together with his friends Parthiban and Arun and their families. They were enriching holidays. The topic could be anything related our personal or professional growth, religion, or anything else. On one of such holidays, each one of us was to tell everything negative and positive about the others. He would always urge to spread happiness through our words and not to spread negativitywiththewrongwords. Much before Kusters India came into existence;he had a thought about having Kusters India. 04 KING OF SHOARMA e orderingthe food from the m nuwhichhealwaysdid From day one when I set my foot on Indian soil on behalf of Syntech International Hari was there to guide me. Alth ough his busines s d r i v e w a s phenomenal and his knowledge overwhelming he had one other excellent quality. T h a t w a s h i s e n t e r t a i n i n g ability. All the e v e n i n g s w e spent, andthathas been dozens per year, were 'gezellig "as we would say. I discovered that he could speak the Venlo dialect and whenever we had more to drink, the more we both spoke Dutch. Hewantedtokeepupwiththelanguage! When I told him about my sporting career we immediately found common ground in his sport: Cricket. He could speak with passion about his hero Tendulkar. And so the evenings were always very well spent whether we talkedaboutbusinessor...cricket. My biggest victory was that i taught him to drink ...wine. Off course he was a beer man but he wanted to try that very European exquisite liquid. On his visits to Venlo he was the King of the Shoarma and also widely known for that intheinnertownofVenlo.Hisreputationwent as far as that when the Shoarma restaurant was closed they immediately opened for Hari. Evenwhenthiswasinthemiddleofthenight. On the picture you see him ordering the food from the menu which he always did. educated me in Indian food culture which till today I appreciateverymuch. 06 BEYOND CUSTOMER’S EXPECTATION!! TheKilburn staff was ...shocked to see Hari Hari simply said SBI is a customer for Kilburn and Kilburn is our customer. Those were the days when we launched our coin dispensing machines in the Indian market. The first order of 50 machines with compact hoppers and Lumina note validators was received from State Bank of India (SBI). All the 50 machines were installed all over Gujarat. The installations of all the machines were done successfully with the help of our site technicians from RBI and technicians from Kilburn, Ahmedabad. Our technicians of RBI as well the technicians of Kilburn were very new to the product, hence a t t e n d i n g t o t h e s e machinesonthefieldwasa challenge for them as many machines were installed at remote locations. T h e c o i n dispensing machine needs frequent attendance for cleaning of the note validators and coin hoppers and sometimes the customer used to call even for filling coins. After few months, the technicians of Kilburn started receiving frequent break down calls for these machines due to the introduction of new stainless steel coins into the market by RBI. The technicians were so tired of attendingtothecallsofthesemachinesthatthey finally started blaming the quality of our machines. The complaints regarding the quality of our machines, was conveyed by the Kilburn marketing team to our marketing team who in turn conveyed the same to Hari. At around 8.30 in the evening when I returned back to office after completing my field work, Hari came to me and asked me, “Sudarshan what is your plan for tomorrow, can we go to Ahmedabad in the morning?.”Iwasnotevenawareoftheissuesbut the way he put it; I could realize that there were some serious issues with our coin dispensing machines hence I immediately agreed upon and ourticketswerebookedforAhmedabad. We reached Ahmedabad in the morning and we were at Kilburn office even before they opened their office. The Kilburn staff’s was shocked to see Hari and myself in front of them. They were not able to tell us anything about our machines but simply said we were not aware that Kusters will take-up this matter so seriously. Hari simply said SBI is a customer for Kilburn and Kilburn is our customer, it is our duty to attend to our customers andsortouttheissuespromptly. Entire team of Kilburn, Ahmedabad were delighted to have Hari and me with them for sorting out the issues reported by SBI. All the technicians were instructed by their manager to provide us their full support for solving the problems. We discussed in detail about the problems of individual machines and left Kilburn office for visiting the customers. We went around Gujarat visiting all the concerned machines and sorting outtheissues.

07 A man with milliondreams, WHO WAS DREAMING FOR OTHERS TOO... - Sankar Balasubramanian Hari said today I really a beer and I am hungry too.deserve There is one incident I still recall and will not forget during my life time. The problem with one of the machines was intermittent and Hari was trying to find out the cause of the same. He started to work on the machine at 10.30 in the morning and kept on working till 7.30 in the evening. I was astonished to see him working on the machine continuously for almost 9 hours without a single break. I reminded him twice for lunch at 1:30 PM and after sometime and for tea at 4:30 PM but he simply replied, “I am not hungry now.” But at last we found out the problem and rectified the same at 7.30 in the evening. He was very happy and said, “Sudarshan today I really deserve a beer and I am hungrytoo.Let’sgotohotelandhaveourdinner.” Hari’s dedication towards his work and his customers has left a lasting impression on me and I will always feel privileged to have worked along with him. I will deeply cherish the memories I have accumulated and the lessons that I have learned from him. I will always feel the loss of a good human being, a good engineer, a good entrepreneur and above all a dear friend for the restofmylife. - Sudarshan

10 FROM EYES TOTHOUGHTS ost of the people are just remembered; we don’t feel them after they’re physically not in Mthe world. There are only few people whose presence is felt even they are not between us. Hari was one of them and still you can feel his existence. I have worked with several people andyoualsomighthaveworkedwithseveralbutthereareveryfewpeoplewhochangeyourstyleofworkingand directionofyourlife. Hari was a person who will not force you or ask you to work hard but he will work hard by himself and will inspire you for doing hard work. There are several incidents which I want to tell you but here I will mention just one. We were working on a research project together and myself, Hari and Rajeev used to leave late in nights butwhenwecomebackonthenext day, securityguardusetotellusthatHaricamebackinthenightafterhaving hisdinnerandwasworkingtillmorning. When ever you are working in the office and if Hari is around you, the atmosphere will automatically becomeinspiringandhealthy. Hari’s decision-making power was ultimate. Any problem cannot be a problem for him for a long time. All these things made him a very good manager. He use to give full freedom to express your thoughts and considers your opinion while making decisions. That was the thing, which makes your relationship with Hari as a friendnotasa CEOor Employee. 14 MY BEST FRIEND Neverthoughtabout it that I have to write something about Hari on this kind of situation. I am really notsurewhetherIcanwriteeverythingabouthim. I rememberour first trip to Tirupati, where we both were preparing the very important presentation till morning.Ifoundthesincerityofthepersonandalsorealizedifthepersonstartssomethingwillfinishthejobbefore goestosleep. During 2006-2007 we both sat together and shared our views about business. At the end of the discussion we both decided to start the journey together and fulfill our dream. Our decision was to make the organization as a differentkindoforganizationwithproductandservices, whichnootherbusinesshousecanmatch.Wealsothought totouchthelifeofmaximumpeoplethroughourbusiness.Accordingtomeourjourneyday(withaction)startedon th 7 of October 2007 when we decided to enter into commercial bank business. We also came to the conclusion that we could only achieve through a dedicated force of leaders in the organization who will be the key to achieve the success. After this day we sat many nights and days and discussed about different challenges and strategy. I think, I amthepersonwhohadmaximumargumentswithhimduringlast6years. Let me tell you about the deal we had between us. We both agreed that whatever be the differences of opinion or arguments we will conclude the meeting with one conclusion, which will be good for the organization. We will not talk about who win in the debate or whose idea won. We also agreed that we will not have any ego among ourselves. Till our last meeting we both kept our promises and concluded each discussion with a positive decision. We were transparent enough to each other. 15 LEADER Abrother, a mentor,a leader. These words would, I feel, best describe Hari, whose charisma has so engulfed us in both our professional and personal life that it now seems difficult to realize that he has left us. But has he? No. He still stays amidst us his principles guiding us throughout. Having worked with Hari for so many years, I wonder how he could keep that smile in tiring circumstances.Astheysay,whenthegoinggetstough,thetoughgetsgoing.Thattoughnessthoughneverleft the realm of humility and politeness. 16 HARI - ATRUE YOGI ...we both learnt an important lesson "Don’t Quit” DearHari, WheneveryousleptlessandwokeupearlynextmorningIalwaysthoughtyoudidnotwanttowastetime in sleeping. But never did I realise that you were running against time. You had so much work to do and so much more to achieve, you had many ideas and dreams to be realised. Then why did you decide now to takethislongsleep?Wasityourchoiceorsomeoneelse's?Whothoughtitwasenough? You were part of my Family and you were just the next person after my Father to whom I could look up to. Was it your polite behaviour and sincere concern that found a special place in the hearts of my Wife, Children, all my Family members, all my Friends and all my Business Associates? You were literally there with me all the time, in each and every important decision and in every important event in my Life as muchasIwasinyours. I learnt an important lesson from my Father "not to miss meeting people". I learnt another great lesson from you ie "to be able to find time not only for friends and business associates but also for new acquaintances and readily make them your friends". It was this great and rare character of yours which broughtpeopleclosetoyou! You could always live in the "Present Moment" as a True Yogi. You were Passionate in all that you did. You assumedmanyrolestoaccomplishyourgoals-youweretheGodFatherguidingbypracticewhenitcame to leading your organisation, you were a Chanakyan while making strategies, you were a Chatriyan when you fought competition, you were a Task Master when you wanted to complete a job on time. You were a visionaryparexcellenceatayoungage.AboveallyouwereaGreatFather,Husband,SonandFriend. Knowing you was one of the very best things that happened to me during my school days and ever since we were always there for each other. The school days are unforgettable when we studied together, went for tuitions, smoked our first cigarettes on a new year's eve, added shock absorbers to a moped, studied together for the IIT JEE, raced many motor rallies and lately worked on many projects. And in one rally thoughwehadamechanicalfailureofthemotorbikewestillcompletedtherallyasthelastteamwiththe maximum penalty points. 17 HARI's MAGICAL WAND- TRUST I n the Middle of June 2009, all of a sudden, I lost my father due to a cardiac arrest. It was too rude, a shock for me to withstand and because of this sudden development I had to leave the United States and return back to India. At that time, I was only 28 years old and I had to look after my whole family. I was employed in USA in the software field and the entire field was facing a recession in India too, and therefore I was jobless. Sometime in August 2009, Arun felt that my profile and attitude might be useful to Kusters and referred me to Hari. I was interviewed by Hari thoroughly. Within a few days Hari informed me through Arun that they do have a vacancy for me in Kusters in Mumbai. I inturn informed through Arun that my mother being all alone it would be much better for me to get employed in Coimbatore itself. Within the next 10 days, Hari asked me to join in Coimbatore itself in the vacancy created by one person leaving just then. Within 2 weeks of my acquaintance Hari insisted that I should not call him as Hari Sir. He said it is enough if I call him just Hari. It's Hari's Nature that he moves with everyone who works for Kusters as a friend. He never puts in any air as if, he is a big boss and CEO of this company in India. This is the secret of his success because he carries everyone along with him as a team. Because of this team spirit, whatever Hari asks anyone to do, he will do it whole heartedly and with dedication. Within 2 months of joining Kusters Coimbatore, Hari was in a position to judge my real capacity and he understood what I can do and what I cannot do. Based on this trust which he developed on me whenever I went to him with a new idea, he gave me the full opportunity and freedom to work with the idea without any interference or interruption. This gave me a sense of belonging to the company On some occasions I have noticed that thinking that I am presenting an entirely a new idea, I will tell about my project to Hari. He will listen to me very patiently as if he is coming to know that idea for the first time. After my presentation, he may say that when I tried these ideas i faced such and such problems. I will really be surprised as to why Hari did not cut me short with my presentation in the beginning itself. That's the difference between an ordinary man and a Leader. Then he will tell these are the failures we have noticed but if you feel confident you can overcome them you can still proceed. Initial failures have never stopped Hari from pursuing persistently with the project. He did allow me to proceed in that manner on many projects of which some of them have succeeded beyond all expectations. On some occasions when I was not able to complete my projects on time and appeared very sad Hari will notice as soon as he enters my office. He used to come to me and ask me directly why you look unhappy, then he will encourage me by saying that, in any product development there is bound to some teething troubles. Then he will discuss about the possible solutions with me and give me his ideas and allow me to work independently using those ideas to solve the problem. These are all the sterling qualities which made him an Outstanding Leader and CEO. Today in his absence, I feel it is our bounden duty to translate Hari's dreams into reality and so it will be difficult for us to even think of leaving this wonderful company nurtured by an unparalleled leader like Hari. HARI - THEENTREPRENEUR CUM CEO He dreamed, thought, planned, lived for K U S T E R S "One does not discover new lands without consenting to lose sight of the shore for a very long time"- Andre Gide When I think of Hari, I can only connect his life with the above quote. Even before the Harvard University published the book on Blue Ocean Strategy, Hari started practicing it for the survival and growth of Kusters India. When the market for the products like Currency shredding machines reached the saturation point he was able to conceive of products that never existed. That in essence is the spirit of Entrepreneurship. At this point of time I would like to quote what Bernard shaw has said about entrepreneurship "Some people see things that are and ask Why? Some people dream of things that never were and ask Why not?" G B Shaw Even though he was not the owner- he assumed and conducted himself as if he is the Owner of Kusters. He dreamed, thought, planned, lived for Kusters till his last breath. Very rarely one can come across such a total identification and dedication of any CEO for the company he works for. Even before the products he has visualized is developed fully, he always conceived of two more products to be developed concurrently so that whichever comes out first can sustain the company's growth. This is how the Cheque Deposit Machine, Coin Vending Machine, Bill Payment terminal, Information kiosk, etc. were developed and launched. He was always dreaming about the rapid growth of Kusters even when the rest of the world was struggling to combat recessionary trends. He was not at anytime frightened about what was happening in the rest of the world. He was very clear that the products which he launched will have a growing market presence at least in India. If only the Western world had not been subjected to an extreme level of depression in the Banking sector, Kusters India would have been exporting the Indian made machines to the West registering a global presence. Even the night before his last day of Life he was talking to me about a new product to be made till 11PM and informed me that he will meet with me the next day evening at 4.30pm to do a detailed plan for launching the product. Unfortunately @ 4.20 PM the merciless claws of destiny gripped him and in a trice have snatched him from away from all of us. At this point I'm choked with emotion to continue with my writing and therefore I conclude with an ancient Sanskrit saying which is most relevant to this agonizing occasion. "When you were born, you cried while the world rejoiced. Live your life in such a way that when you Die, the world cries while you rejoice" Hari, you lived such a life. Hari could never afford the luxury of a good sleep or good rest when he was alive. Let us all pray that at least now he has a well deserved eternal rest. -Arun Arumugam
