Kobasa (1979) studied the personality trait of hardiness, which includes commitment, control, and challenge. Participants completed surveys measuring stress and illness. Results showed those higher in hardiness experienced less stress and illness when facing similar life challenges, as hardiness allows one to view life changes as less stressful and more within one's control.
