Harboring Hearts Overview
1.
2. Facts
◼Heart disease is the leading cause of death for all men
and women in the U.S.
◼Cardiac surgery or treatment can cost anywhere from
$30,000 to $450,000 for a single procedure
◼In the United States, approximately 50% of all heart
patients and their families earn less than $50,000 a year
There is a shortage of affordable short-term housing in New York, yet heart
patients and their families face immediate need for such housing during a
period of immense emotional stress. Harboring Hearts believes that all
patients should have access to the highest quality care, regardless of their
financial situation. Facing heart disease is financially and emotionally
challenging, especially when traveling from far away to seek the best
medical care.
3. Our History
In 2008, Michelle Javian lost her father to heart disease. For two years
while she was by her father’s side at New York-Presbyterian Hospital,
Michelle witnessed firsthand the lack of refuge and community support
for heart patients and their families. Around the same time, Yuki Kotani’s
father was in the same hospital, under the same surgeon, awaiting a
heart transplant after years of battling heart disease.
Michelle approached Yuki with the idea to create a charity to help these
families and on April 10, 2009, the 1 year anniversary of Michelle’s father’s
passing, Harboring Hearts received notice of their official 501c3.
