Project-based learning (PBL) is a student-cantered pedagogy that involves a dynamic classroom approach in which students acquire a deeper knowledge through active exploration of real-world challenges and problems. Students learn about a concept or subject by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to a complex question, challenge, or problem. PBL contrasts with paper-based, rote memorization, or teacher-led instruction that presents established facts or portrays a smooth path to knowledge by instead posing questions, problems or scenarios.
Students(6th-8th) of SNIS also learned many scientific concepts through PBL which strengthened their knowledge and skills in Science and made learning more interesting.
They also displayed their work in the form of models, charts and presentations to the students of grades 4 and 5 to motivate them and create more interest in Science.
Let’s celebrate this Mandela International Day by remembering the great man’s achievements in working towards conflict resolution, democracy, human rights, peace, and reconciliation.
This International Justice Day, let’s appreciate the efforts of all the courts of the world in administering justice. Let’s strive to put an end to all injustices in the world and fight for peace and happiness.
Malala Day’ is celebrated internationally to commemorate the efforts of the education activist and noble prize winner Malala Yousafzai. She has been constantly fighting all odds and working towards ensuring that every girl, everywhere gets access to education.Let us join hands towards ensuring that every girl child gets educated.
This World Population Day, let’s join hands to spread awareness about the global population issues, including the importance of gender equality, human rights, family planning, and more.
The last UOI unit was exciting and educational for the Grade 2 and 3 students, they were involved in a series of activities which enriched and enhanced their knowledge. Right from on campus surveys on waste management to making handmade paper bags with the waste collected from all the classes to field-trips, the students learned and had fun all the way. The field trip to a farm taught the students all about organic farming, recycling and how to a develop sustainable energy practices. It was a fun field-trip, one both grades will remember fondly.

The power of a dad in a child’s life is unmatched. Dads teach them patience, kindness, strength & courage. Wishing all the wonderful fathers a very Happy Father’s Day!!!
Students in the girls' dormitory of SNIS got the wonderful opportunity to visit the ‘Nativity Children’s home and interact with the children there. Before the outing, the girls excitedly prepared for the visit and came up with different ideas to entertain the children. They choreographed dance performances by themselves and even came up with interactive games. The boarding students of SNIS took along with them 3 boxes of clothes and toys to share with the children.
On reaching there, the girls received a delightful surprise from the orphanage girls as they performed a welcome song. The boarders got to know them a little more and discovered how ambitious they are with many of the girls aspiring to be doctors and engineers and even lawyers. They danced with our students and enthusiastically watched the performances.
It was a visit to remember and cherish. It exemplified all that SNIS stands for, nurturing students into successful, responsible and ethical leaders who can brighten the world with compassion, curiosity and creative fire.
Garbage has become a serious problem in the world today. Only one out of every six water bottles ends up in the recycling bin, the rest are sent to landfills or contribute to devastating ocean pollution. Teaching children to care for the environment is a learning experience that is an important part of growing up. It gives them skills in respect, empathy, appreciation, responsibility, and teaches them about consequences.
Grade 2 has been inquiring into waste and its devastating effects on the planet. Our students have been learning how each of us can help lessen the burden on the planet and save marine and land animals by recycling, reusing and reducing your overall consumption of plastic and other waste. Recycling is one of the best ways for us to have a positive impact on the world in which we live.
Learning by example is one of the most important ways to discover. In an attempt to learn through doing, the students enthusiastically participated in the ‘Best out of Waste’ activity. It was amazing to see the different innovative ideas the students came up with making the activity and enriching and a worthwhile experience. They’ll have a greater appreciation for the way things work, and a better understanding of our precious ecosystem.
This World Environment Day, let's strive to create awareness about how important taking care of our environment is. The UN theme for World Environment Day, 2019 is 'Air Pollution'

Let's celebrate this International Biodiversity Day by understanding and increasing our awareness of the various biodiversity issues. This year's International Biodiversity Day focuses on biodiversity as the foundation for our food and health and as a key catalyst to transforming food systems and improving human wellbeing. Let us all join hands towards protecting our ecosystem and the biodiversity.
The SNIS ESL Camp April 2019 drew to a close on Monday 29th April with a grand display of the students' experiences since they started their journey on April 3rd. The Valedictory function was a clear demonstration of the visitors' delight to have experienced new learning as they presented their reflections, scintillating dance performances and a repertoire of musical talent show which included songs, instrumental music performances and of course beat boxing display which left the audience spellbound. The program ended with the distribution of awards and certificates. We will miss their enthusiasm and their zeal for learning and will surely carry them in our hearts.
Project-based learning is a dynamic classroom approach in which students actively explore real world problems and challenges and acquire a deeper knowledge on the subject.
MYP students of SNIS apply the same learning technique for Chemistry & Biology as well.
On one such project, students were asked to came up with some interesting experiments and explain the principle behind that, which was part of their assessment for RT-4.
Some of the experiments were:
Invisible ink experiment, fractional distillation, Volcano experiment, Kidney model, Chromatography of chlorophyll, reaction of aspirin with oil and water and many more.
Students enjoyed their projects a lot and showed s lot of enthusiasm while preparing for it.
Grade 7 were introduced to conversion of length, mass and capacity. The students of grade 7 presented their understanding of the unit through presentations. They were divided into 4 groups. Each group chose a country, like China, India, Mesopotamia etc., wherein they researched about the chosen civilization/country's history of unit conversion, when those civilizations started having measuring units for commodities etc. Students also presented some fun facts about unit conversions practiced in these countries.
Grades 8 and 9 also attended the presentation and actively participated in a small quiz conducted by each group. The students completely enjoyed the activities and learned a lot from it.
This World Health Day, let’s focus on encouraging everyone and ourselves to take better steps towards improving health. With the kind of lifestyle we lead today, it’s important to create health awareness among children and adults, alike. Let’s celebrate this World Health Day by promising to eat healthy, exercise well and maintain a positive state of mind.
The first SNIS ESL Camp of 2019 was off to an amazing start! Our young campers after spending the morning of 3rd April unpacking and resting, assembled in the school’s Learning Resource Centre (LRC) for an afternoon filled with excitement and adventure.
After a quick briefing, 3 teams set off on a race around the school, completing tasks to get their next clues. Teams first scrambled around the LRC to find a copy of a ‘Sounder’ an American classic, and then raced to the dance room to learn some Indian dance moves. Once they mastered that, they raced to the school’s swimming pool to do a task which had them wet and giggly. After the pool, it was time for some games. The teams raced to our school’s Basketball court to shoot some baskets. This took a while, as the teams struggled to get the baskets in, but perseverance paid off and all teams managed to finish the task! For the final task, the teams made their way to our school’s indoor sports stadium, where they tried their hands at Archery. Finally, the teams raced back to the starting point, where excited SNIS students and teachers were waiting for the winners. It was a great way to start our ESL Camp and the campers got to meet some of our amazing teaching staff members and understood the layout of the school and its facilities.
Students of Grade 6 displayed their talent through Language Arts presentation, during their unit on Civilization focused on the Chinese civilization. Groups took up tasks of recreating “Technological innovation”, “writing”, “Hierarchy” and “religious beliefs” through role plays and craft work. A wide array of artifacts were remade like the oracle bones and the tomb along with the hierarchy system that existed during 1600 BCE. The famous Shang dynasty was taken up as one of the earliest Chinese civilizations and veneration (worship) of ancestors was depicted by the students through a role play.
The 6th and 7th graders of SNIS assembled in the Activity Hall on the afternoon of 22nd March for an interesting workshop on responding to literature.
SNIS is a part of a broader 'Reading Program - Readathon' , an initiative which aims to get all the Middle and Senior School students engrossed in the magic of books. The focus of this workshop was 'Responding to Reading' an area where the students needed some guidance on. The workshop leader developed the workshop through an interesting story telling session, which paved the way for further explorations on the ways we react to literature. The students learnt the different ways in which 'post-its' can be used to track their response to the texts and the different ways in which the responses can be recorded. It was a fun, and insightful workshop for our young students
“Let’s all focus on the people who are helping, and be one of them.”
― Peta Kelly
The students of grade K1 learnt about the different community helpers around them. The students gained knowledge on the various community places they see around them and also the various people who makes the work easier. As part of this unit the students went on a field trip to a nearby Post Office and Fire station on 22nd March 2019, to see how the community helpers work.
The students wrote letters independently to their parents and dropped them in the post box. They had an opportunity to have discussions with the post master, post men and people at the post office.
The visit to the Fire Station was an enriching one as they were taught some ways and means to prevent fire. The students were very excited to see the fire truck with its different mechanisms. The Station Master interacted with each of them and gave them a brief insight into their work.
This trip was very informative and students thoroughly enjoyed the trip.
In accordance with World Down Syndrome Day, 21st March, 2019, the Biology/EVM students of Grade 9 at SNIS presented a short assembly to spread awareness about Down Syndrome. Down Syndrome is an incurable genetic disorder caused by having an extra chromosome, and can result in physical growth delays, intellectual disabilities and characteristic facial features.
In keeping with the traditional gesture, grades 6 to 10 came to school in #OddSocks – a pair of coloured, mismatched socks. Odd socks have become a symbol of Down Syndrome; the socks both encourage diversity and are shaped like chromosomes.
The presentation showed the theme song of the year, lives of some accomplished people with Down Syndrome and how it is possible to live a happy life despite having Down Syndrome.
On this ‘World Water Day’, let’s do our bit to inspire people around the world towards sustainable use of water resources. With the UN-Water theme of 2019 for the ‘World Water Day’ being ‘Leaving no one behind’, this year we need to encourage everyone around us to consider marginalized groups as they are often overlooked and discriminated against when they try to access safe water.
Electrochemistry is a branch of Chemistry that deals with the study of the production of electricity
from the energy that is released during chemical reactions.
Grade 9 students learnt this concept by setting up an experiment in the chemistry lab.
They used aqueous solution of sodium chloride as an electrolyte and different
combinations of electrodes (Copper-copper, zinc-copper, graphite- copper) and then tested the
voltage across the two terminals with the help of a multi meter and voltmeter.
They found out that, when the difference is more in the reactivity of the two electrodes, higher will be
voltage generation.
